I really recommend these two books to all readers.  You don't have to be a fan of X sports or skate boarding to be interested in these books. This is a story of two broken people finding their place in the world and hoping their place is with each other. It is friends who stand by their friends and never let them down.  Giving each other the support they need when at times they would rather just be alone. While the issues that are discussed in this book are not to be taken to be lightly and Kay does a magnificent job with it. She does an amazing job expression each and every emotion for all the characters and clutches your heart. Her skill for storytelling is breathtaking and sucks you right in. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this story and look forward to reading more of her work. Beautiful job, Kay, beautiful job.  - Escaping Reality One Book at a Time

Whew! What a great novel!

I had to walk away from this book a couple of times while reading this- THAT'S HOW ENCOMPASSING THIS BOOK WAS FOR ME! I started this last night, and couldn't seem to stop, except when the suspense actually felt too intense for me. It had all the elements of a great continuing storyline (If you haven't read Skater Boy, you NEED to read that before this- My Skater Boy is a sequel) of romance filled with angst, trauma, despair, then hope.

I've been recommending Skater Boy to friends, and now have a second book to recommend them!

My only point of sadness is that one point of Hindley's life wasn't resolved- but I hope that the subplot regarding the one who was in jail (sorry, don't want to spoil any part of this book for you) gets some attention in future books. I know that timeline-wise, it's not possible to resolve this, but I'd just love to have this addressed in future books!

I didn't think that this story could get any better, But it did. It started off right where book 1 left off at. This one turns out to be Hindley's turn to open up about her past and share her secrets. OK let me talk about the ending which had been bugging me since I finished the story. I didn't like it don't get me wrong I like the way the story turned out in fact I love how the story turned out I just didn't like the huge jump that is did that kinda sucked.

Perfection

Kay, If you read your reviews (most authors do, but some choose not to), just know that I loved this story so much. At the end of book one I downloaded book 2 and continued the story of Rory Gregor and Hindley Hagan. It was funny in places, heartbreaking in others. The story's plot flowed perfectly and I just loved it.

Professor Leed looks at how the traumatic experience of combat itself and the wholesale shattering of the conventions and ethical codes of normal social life turned ordinary civilians into 'liminal men', men living beyond the limits of the accepted and the expected. He uses the concept of liminality to illuminate the central features of the war experience: the separation from 'home': the experience of pollution, death, comradeship, and 'the uncanny': and the ambivalence of returning veterans about civilian society. In a final chapter Professor Leed assesses the long-term political impact of the front experience. He finds that the end of hostilities did not mean the end of the war experience as much as the beginning of a process by which that experience was framed, institutionalized, celebrated and relived in political action as well as in fiction.

About the Author
Terces Engelhart has been preparing and serving flavorful food and delicious meals since her childhood. She is interested in the healing power of food to help people who suffer from diet-based diseases, as she did. Engelhart and her husband, Matthew, opened the first location of their popular Café Gratitude 2004 in San Francisco, California. They have opened a second restaurant in San Francisco as well ones in Berkeley, Marin, and Los Angeles. The cafés, which support local farmers, sustainable agriculture, and environmentally friendly products, serve living, organic food made with the freshest ingredients possible.The Engelharts published The Abounding River Logbook as well as The Abounding River board game, both of which focus on their practice of being in abundance. In addition, they lead monthly workshops on this topic and are often asked to be guests on radio and TV shows. The Engelharts live with two of their five children in San Francisco. Orchid (Richard Slayen) has studied food and cooking in such exotic places as Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Central America, and Mexico. This Is the Gourmet Answer to Raw Foods

One of the hardest things for me to adjust to when paring down my intake of food is the adjustment of making any kind of elaborate gourmet style meal if I need to, to making something out of almost no ingredients and not even be able to COOK IT!

When I switched to primarily raw foods, my family was on the verge of Mutiny. I tried RAW IN TEN MINUTES which at first was okay, but I have a good imagination. All of the recipes started to taste the same and my family went from eating everything on their plates to making excuses to avoid dinner and eat in their rooms (stashed organic corn chips etc).

When I saw I AM GRATEFUL, I figured it might be another blonger of a book, but I decided to try it anyway. It was someone's birthday the week I got it, so I decided to make a raw dessert (strawberry shortcake) and then a baked cake for everyone else.

I never made it to the cake. Everyone went berserk over the raw strawberry shortcake.

I have made about 1/2 of the recipes in this book so far and I can say OMG it is truly FANTASTIC. Our favorites are: Marinated Veggies, Falafels, Fiery Carrot Avocado Soup, Coconut Curry Soup (Thai), Thai green papaya salad , Coconut Lime Dressing, Jalapeno mint chutney, Smokey Mole (OMG that is the BEST RECIPE EVER), Marinara with Brazil nut Parmesan cheese, Pad Thai,pecan porridge, Cinnamon Rolls, Strawberry Shortcake (with raspberries is DIVINE), German Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Apple Cobbler, and Lemon Meringue Pie.

We don't eat desserts that often, or we would have ripped through the entire dessert section.

Preparation is about that of any meal- it is not too involved on some recipes- but others, take overnight food dryer time and have to be planned accordingly.

However, I find that it works out fine in some cases to do an overnight. I am really in love with the recipes in this book. They taste AMAZING and Gourmet in quality, yet they have simple ingredients in some cases. I substitute ingredients I don't have until I can get what I need quite often.

I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is like Moosewood used to be to vegetarians years ago........

A Delicious Introduction to Gourmet Raw Vegan Cuisine

I was given this book as a gift, and I in turn, made a gift of this book to a friend, who like myself, is vegan.

One of the challenges that we vegans have is to prepare nutritious meals that are also delicious, so I am always looking for new ways to enhance the food I prepare. I enjoyed "I AM Grateful" and found several recipes that I could make right away with the tools I have in my kitchen. I especially enjoyed the "nut cheese" recipes.

There are three things I noted that make me rate it less than a five.

(1) To prepare many of the dishes, one must have a food processor and a dehydrator. I have neither, so I find that making many of the recipes is not currently possible for me.

(2) There is a lot of added sugars and fat in this cuisine, and not a lot of protein. It relies heavily on nuts and coconut (which have a lot of fat) and agave syrup for many recipes. I think for special meals and celebrations, this cuisine is ideal and delicious. But as I have begun to monitor my intake of fat and sugar, I don't see that I could eat this food all the time.

(3) It could get quite expensive to eat this way for those who are on a fixed or low income. For example, to make a quart of hemp seed milk using their recipe would cost about $17.00 to $18.00, as the recipe calls for two cups (one pound) of organic hemp seeds. Ditto for almond, hazel nut, and other nut milks.

The book is well written, informative, thought-provoking (Terces inserts coaching questions on almost every page), nicely-illustrated, and the recipes I have made have been consistently delicious. Overall, it is a wonderful book for your vegan friends.

Best. Tiramisu. Ever.

Well honestly I bought this just because I ate at the cafe and the tiramisu was for sure the best I've ever had... and it's raw vegan! (Which is not to say it's low-calorie... but it is delicious and doesn't give me a dairy hangover. In fact, It's like the best energy bar ever--it really does pick you up and keep you going.) Anyhow, back to the book--I've only made the tiramisu so far-- a bit time (and ingredient) consuming but worth it. Made a week's worth of tiramisu for 2 (I probably should have shared...). The irish moss (which many have written about in their reviews) was new to me, but I bought some on Amazon and it worked out just fine using the directions provided in the book-- just wash well, soak, and then puree well--no need to cook but you do need a good powerful blender. I did find I needed to tweak some ratios-- specifically add the coffee to the almond flour (rather than pour over in a later step as directed) to make it moist enough to mix with the date paste; added some extra water too. I also don't know if the 30 oz of almond flour was dry or fluid oz-- I would assume dry but that just seemed like wayy too much-- so i used about 2/3 of that and it came out tasty.
Other tips-- they say let it chill in the fridge/freezer for an hour between adding layers-- you need way more time than that (at least in the fridge, which is what i did. It was a wildly different (and tastier) cake the next morning once it had had time to set properly. And lastly, the whipped cream portion of the recipe makes a TON of whipped cream. I barely used 1/3 of it (which was reassuring since it's not exactly health food...) --I've been adding the remainder to smoothies. Yum

Great collection of tips!

"Studio Anywhere" is a great guide for photographers who want to improve the quality of their images without needing a ton of expensive gear or a permanent studio location. I really enjoyed the book, the author is very specific about how he lit each example picture, even including screenshots of Lightroom settings of how he color graded the pictures and fixed problems.

The author covers many different scenarios: low-key portraits, bright and dark product shots, shooting with water, bright sky and dark night portraits... always in tight spots with minimal gear. Keep in mind the author really likes hard light, like rock-hard light from an unmodified speedlight. If you're a fan of soft, subtle lighting, you might not like all of his photos.

A few nitpicks: The author frequently refers to speedlights as "bare-bulb strobes". Speedlights have lenses and mirrors that enable their features, they are not bare-bulb strobes. I think he just means "bare flash", meaning no modifier was used. Also he makes a big deal about how superior Neutral Density filters are to High-Speed Sync modes on speedlights, but he compares the two unfairly to make ND filters sound wonderful and HSS sound terrible, using different exposure settings for the two tests. HSS costs about two stops of power, if you put a two-stop ND filter in front of your lens, you will also need an additional two stops of flash power. Anyway, I'm just saying ND filters are not some magical solution to flash sync problems, using them requires more flash power just like HSS does, and ND filters make it harder to change lenses, since you also have to change filters when you do, possibly requiring multiple filters for different size lenses, step-up rings, etc. HSS just works.

So, if you're looking for a collection of practical tips for using the world as your studio to take great pictures, "Studio Anywhere" is highly recommended!

The idea behind this book is great - you really don't "need" a studio.

However, I am a little disappointed how much the author relies on using "post" to make up for lack of lighting, when in many of examples it would have been easy/possible to add another flash. Obviously we'd all like to not have to carry around that little bit extra gear, but it just seems to go against the whole concept that we do 90% of our shots without a studio. We are not talking run and gun here, we're talking posed sittings, which may or may not have time pressures and baggage allowance issues.

On the whole the guidelines and ideas are great, but I do feel the heavy reliance on "Lightroom" to fix what we didn't get on set, is a little off-putting.

This book is really great if you're into hard light (and/or closed shadow looks)!! Or really into that Marc Jacobs print ad look or multi-color gel work. It has some great tips for the every man, for the poor man, for the photographer in a pinch, or the basement studio photographer. There was definitely all kinds of photography styles included, some which were softer and I really appreciated, but if you were looking for a book more about utilizing natural light, he tends to use flashes and explains in more detail the dramatic looks. It's worth keeping in my library although it's not my style, I really think the info is beneficial for the starving artists and follow him on instagram for more tips!
