If you like or love this series it is worth the money to read

I'm a huge James Patterson fan in general, but not a graphic novel woman usually. My husband picked this up for me for Christmas and I was not terribly impressed when I first saw it. However, I love the Daniel X series and this was a new one. Once I opened it I was enthralled. It's well written, as is everything Mr. Patterson does and the graphic pictures are fantastic. I hope he does several more of these.

Good Introduction to Daniel X

James Patterson has exploded into the YA market over the last few years. The thing I noticed, though, is that all of his YA books have secondary authors. This time it is Leopoldo Gout. This pair of writers put together a pretty good story.

The back story is this: Daniel X is a humanoid alien whose race is dedicated to hunting down and killing evil aliens. Daniel's parents were killed by one when he was younger. One who was at the top of a list of the most dangerous aliens on Earth. Daniel escaped and later returned to find the list. Now he is dedicated to hunting down all the aliens on the list, setting as his ultimate goal, killing the alien who killed his parents.

Daniel has some cool powers. He can shape change. He can create real objects with the power of his mind. This includes people. It is kind of weird.

In this story Daniel is hunting down "Number Six." To do so, Daniel decides to make contact with and befriend Number Six's son. Weirdly enough, the son looks human. The father does not. The son is willing to help as he dislikes what his father is doing: setting up alien hunts here on Earth, with not a care for the collateral damage this causes.

The story is action packed, but not to the point of mindlessness. It is not simplistic. There are a good many twists and turns. One thing I really enjoy in a story is for it to surprise me. This one managed to do that several times.

It is billed as a Young Adult series. I think that is more than fair. As an adult there are still some plot holes that I fall through that would not have bothered me as a younger reader.

If you like YA, science fiction that borders at times on fantasy, and graphic novels (especially when all three are wrapped into one package) give this a try. It is a good way to introduce yourself to Daniel X.

Pedestrian writing bolstered by beautiful artwork

There isn't much to say for the story. It's enjoyable enough. It hits all the marks in this story about an alien boy who can crate reality whole cloth and needs to deal with all the aliens who are out to kill him. Apparently this is just one book in a series of books that James Patterson lent his name to (with others doing the actual writing) and it has some decent qualities. However, most of the writing is fairly pedestrian. YOu get a lot of cliches that sound like teenagers coming up with dialogue that would be "cool" instead of believable. The fact that all of Daniel's best friends have been created from his mind has a lot of potential for angst and exploration of loneliness. This potential is squandered.

However, if you don't expect much, you don't need to get too hung up on the silliness. ANd the art is beautiful so there's that.

About the Author
Jason Welker teaches International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement Economics at Zurich International School in Switzerland, where he has lived with his wife since 2008 (and as of 2012, his new daughter). Prior to teaching in Zurich, Jason taught Economics at the Shanghai American School in China. Jason graduated from university with degrees in Economics and Education after spending his own high school years living and studying at an international school in Malaysia. Jason created his website, Welker’s Wikinomics, in 2007 to provide his students with online learning resources, including a wiki and a blog. Great Review Book!

Great book for reviewing. I bought this book to revise for my IB Economics HL exam in may. It explained all the key concepts, explained the diagrams and gave examples, it really helped me understand the topic of Microeconomics even better. I would recommend this book for any AP or IB students, it really gives you a detailed overview of macroeconomic objectives.

Hal Leonard has finally given credit where it is due by releasing a tab book by death metal legends Cannibal Corpse. This was done with help from members of Cannibal Corpse themselves, so these are accurate transcriptions and a must for guitar players wanting to learn to play these the right way. There are a great line-up of songs here, of course with such a huge catalog it won't please everyone, but they did pick a solid batch. Here's the complete list -

Long-awaited tab book is finally out

Hey all extreme metal fans!
I would say this great tab book has been awaited for a while as I followed the official Cannibal Corpse forum on their homepage. Out of all the members, it has been Alex Webster who mostly worked on making it happen.
This tab book is a result of an amazing effort. Every fan of these virtuosos should also own it, this book is essential one for those who love insane (in the best sense) guitar parts, riffs, solos, insane speed, simply for those who love true musicianship.
As to tracklist, I was a bit disappointed not to see Gallery of suicide track, which is one of their classics of all times, but hey! Cannibal Corpse tab book is precious in any way-it means more than a lot to me.

21st century cybercies

This book is a must for people considering the integration of technologies into education. I think that dry, for me anyhow, is a bit harsh. It starts out looking at a case in New Delhi, moves on to a case study in Ireland, and then whisks off to the US. This is just the intro. Chapter 1 reflects on the digital divide, and looks at it from various perspectives and its growth in the world. Chapter 2 look at access. It reviews other technologies such as the telephone, radio, tv, cable, and the vcr as historical examples of technologies that have encroached on society(ies). Chapter 3 looks at the recent history of connectivity and provides once again a global overview. Chapter 4 looks at the resources and languages providing these resources. It considers access for groups with disabilities. Chapter 5 considers Education and literacy. It discusses computer literacy and technological literacy as skills evolving from the 80's and then gets into new multimedia literacies and eventually the need for social and collaborative communities of learning. Chapter 6 discusses social capital and the intimacy shared on the networks of the web nowadays. The final chapter, 7, looks at how technology is becoming embedded with today's society - based on the previous chapters: obviously.

I think that this is perhaps not a book I would buy for my mother, but she would be interested in discussing parts of it. It is not as book that will make the NYT best selling list, but as someone interested in perspectives of 21st century education this book is a unique gift to educators and I personally do not find it dry. It is a well balanced geographic composite of cases from around the world addressing how technology is changing society, and education.

It reminds me a lot of Catalina Laserna's ideas of cybercy, the stage society is now in after first going through a period of oral communication, and the literacy (traditional reading and writing). This is the "new" stage, the stage now - cybercy. It does not address cybercy in a direct sense - but philosophically.

Please read the other review, and then make a decision. I am not selling books here - but if you have interests in technology entering the classroom and the new 21st century literacies - this is a gem.
