About the Author

Dr. John Bernthal is Professor Emeritus of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln.  He has been a speech-language pathologist for over 40 years including employment in the public school, at several universities, and professor and Department Chair for over 30 years. He conducted research, taught and published in the area of speech sounds disorders. He is a past president of the American Speech Language Hearing Association, an ASHA fellow, and recipient of Honors of the Association.

 

Dr. Nicholas Bankson is a Professor Emeritus of Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison University. He has had a 40-year career as a speech-language pathologist, including employment in the public schools, serving as the state supervisor of school programs in Kansas, plus 27 years as a department chair in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Boston University and James Madison University. His scholarly efforts have focused on speech sound disorders and assessment of language disorders in children. He is an ASHA Fellow, and is the recipient of the Honors of ASHA.

 

Dr. Peter Flipsen Jr. is a Professor of Speech-Language Pathology at Pacific University. He has more than 20 years of experience in the field as a clinician, teacher, and researcher. He teaches courses in phonetics and speech sound disorders in children and has published more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles in the field. His research has focused on classification of speech sound disorders, measurement of intelligibility of speech, and speech and language development in children with cochlear implants.

Not an Introductory Guide

There is no doubt that the authors of this text are indeed experts. All concepts have an angular approach and base nearly each written conceptual description with its source, scholarly journal, theorist/investigator or experimental finding.

Sentences are overloaded with information-- there are no fillers and no glaze-over sentences. Any simplistic language that is easily processed in any text for a reader's occassional "breath" are instead substituted with the most technical or clinical term, followed by an overwhelming complexity of language that requires every ounce of concentration and comprehension exercisable. I believe EACH sentence was written with the purpose of leaving someone in complete jaw-dropping awe.

Students opening this book will most likely have encountered the foundational framework for many of the concepts presented and may find just the right amount of challenge and stimulus needed to reactivate their knowledge or expand on it with it's lengthy, thorough, and small-print font. However, I HIGHLY discourage anyone seeking an "introductory guide" or "overview" of articulatory and phonological disorders to begin their studies here. Authors have clearly written this book for the "continuing" student, not the "new" one. Even the introductory chapter is written with the assumption that you have a background in linguistics and/or phonetics. That being said-- this book, I imagine, was intended for 4th-year or graduate level study.

VERY TECHNICAL/DIFFICULT/WORDY

I bought this book solely for an Articulation and Phonological disorders class I'm taking. This is my first semester in grad school, and I have my B.S. in Speech-Language Pathology. I find this book EXTREMELY difficult to understand and it takes me HOURS to comprehend 10 pages at a time. It's clear that the authors are very knowledgeable but I feel like this book is entirely too technical for the likes of an introductory Artic course. I have to constantly look things up online to get a clearer understanding of what the authors were trying to convey in their complex and wordy sentences. After reading a more sensible description from another source online, I often ask myself "Well, why didn't they just say that in the first place?". For anyone who is required to read this text... good luck.

Very helpful information.

I have the 1991 copyright 290 total page book, and it's a tightly written book that I found helpful on many practical areas of catering, whether for 12 or 300 people.

I have read catering books that concentrate more on recipes, this does has some 65 pages on recipes. I have not read many other catering books that concentrate on the behind the scenes work as in depth this book does, so I'd like to hear from caterers on this book to see how other books compare.

It's chapters are: Introduction, Equipment (to own and to rent), Kitchen and Commissary, Staff Requirements, How to Start a Catering Business, Selling the Service, Business Practices, Arranging the Affair (Choosing menu, arranging the table and room, fringe services), The Bar, Special Cakes, Centerpieces, Food Decoration, Menu files.

All poets, according to Wislawa Szymborska, are in a perpetual dialogue with the phrase I don't know. "Each poem," she writes in her 1996 Nobel Lecture, "marks an effort to answer this statement, but as soon as the final period hits the page, the poet begins to hesitate, starts to realize that this particular answer was pure makeshift, absolutely inadequate." As a self-portrait, at least, this is fairly accurate. From the beginning, Szymborska has indeed wrestled with the demon of epistemology. Yet even in her earliest poems, such as "Atlantis," she delivered her speculations with a human--which is to say, a gently ironic--face:

They were or they weren't.
On an island or not.
An ocean or not an ocean
Swallowed them up or it didn't.

Fifteen years later, when her 1972 collection, Could Have, appeared, Szymborska seemed to have made some major inroads into her notorious ignorance. Now she confessed to at least a shred of comprehension, stressing, however, that such knowledge has come at a terrible price: "We read the letters of the dead like helpless gods, / but gods, nonetheless, since we know the dates that follow. / We know which debts will never be repaid. / Which widows will remarry with the corpse still warm." And even in her most recent work, the poet continues to gravitate toward the admirable emptiness of, say, the clouds: "Unburdened by memory of any kind, / they float easily over the facts." Ultimately, though, the joke is on Szymborska, whose poems have grown more witty, more humane, and more tender--in other words, more knowing--with each passing year. View with a Grain of Sand remains an excellent point of entry to Szymborska's oeuvre, but Poems New and Collected is the place to go for a wide-angle view of this superlative and sardonic writer.

Wonderful, even in translation

The worst thing my Polish grandparents did was discourage their children from speaking Polish. Now, two generations removed from the language, I can only wonder at what Ms. Szymborska's astonishing work sounds like in her native tounge. The translators have done an admirable job of establishing a gentle sense of humor, a strong and steady voice in the English versions of these poems, which makes me long all the more to be able to read them in their original Polish.
Ms. Szymborska has that wonderful eastern European ability to show us that everything matters -- our words, our thoughts, our ancestors, our own mortality make us who we are, and who we are exists in an eternal Now. "Life, however long, is always short," she writes, "too short for anything to be added."
Perhaps the most moving of these works is "In Broad Daylight," a fantastic portrait of the poet Krzysztof Baczynski, killed at age 23 during the Warsaw Uprising, as an old man, vacationing in the mountains, sipping soup, readng the paper. Ms. Szymborska shows us how these simple acts, what she calls elsewhere "commonplace miracles," are precious. We who live have an obligation to see the miracle in our very exisitence, to savor and to succor life.
Szymborska deserves to be widely read. This volume is highly recommended.

The best translators of Szymborska, ever.

Szymborska has long been a favorite of mine. I have compared many different English translations of her poetry. The translators of this volume are by far the best. They make Szymborksa's poetry flow effortlessly, seamlessly. This is a a rare and wonderful poetry book.

Each of these poems is totally exactly within its own language. Szymborska is a very clear-cut poet -- straightforward, simple. Her quiet humor is exemplified in the beginning of her Nobel acceotance speech. "They say that the first sentence of any speech is always the hardest. Well, that one's behind me." After that, for the rest of this book, her poems are very concise & wonderfully thoughtful. Lucid. This is welcoming poetry.

The hockey players in the Tulsa Thunderbirds series curse like...well...like hockey players. Also, there is a fair amount of sex in these books. If sex and cursing aren't your cup of tea, these books likely won't be, either.


You do not need to have read the Storm series to follow the Thunderbirds series, and vice versa. Each novel in the Thunderbirds series can stand alone, although your enjoyment will be enhanced by reading them in order.

Gripping with raw emotional situations, that will suck you in and hold you captive right to the very end!

I don't know why, but this story was so emotional for me. More so than any of Catherine Gayle's other books. The details were so painful to read about, but I DID get through it.... and I'm so happy I did. Razor was so brass in all the other books, but he sure redeemed himself in my eyes, that's for darn sure!!!

Tori was sent to the U.S by her father to go to study ballet and also so she could escape a fate no one should have to bear. Her father knew that that was the only way to keep her safe from the Russian Mob. They were after her and her mother so they could use them in a human trafficing ring they were running. She did escape, but in the process both of her parents were brutely killed. After her father was killed, her funds had had been depleteed, so she had to turn to doing things to survive that no one should ever have to resort to doing. After her dreams of becoming a ballerina came to a halt, so did her other means of survival. She heads off to Las Vegas to become a prostitue, but only because it was the only other way she knew of in order to make enough money to survive on. But the first person she runs into that night just happened to be, Razor, a man who took one look at her and instantly knew that there was more behind this woman's actions than really meets the eye.

Razor was so sweet and understanding through this whole thing; he just made me want to melt. And Tallie, I could really kiss that woman for not only not judging her, but also for standing up for her when Tori needed it the most. I also loved Razor's mom, what a woman!!! I loved how Razor kept describing his mother's all business kind of stances....just too funny. But the woman had real back bone to her, probably because she could relate to Tori and what she had been through just to survive. Her and Razor's personal talks on the phone about protection was totally hilarious, too. I also loved Dimas and the way her befriended Tori when so many others turn their back on her. I can't wait to read his story now, because I have a feeling there's really something very deep & dark going on with him, too.

As an added bonus, the early scenes in the book take place at the wedding of Babs and Katie, beloved characters from the Portland Storm series, and if you loved that series...then you'll definitley love this spin-off series!

Dark and disturbing, yet a beautiful love story

This is a really, really dark book. Sometimes hard to read, but I devoured it in a day nonetheless. I'm a fan of the Portland Storm series (of which this is a spinoff series), and I enjoyed the first book in this set. While that one was something of a straightforward sizzler, this one is sizzling yet disturbing, and I had to have faith in the author that Razor and Tori would eventually get their happy ending. Because boy did they deserve it!

Razor has appeared in the previous Portland Storm books as the best friend and bad influence on golden-boy hero Jamie Babcock. Razor is different from Jamie in many ways, but they share the same core of honor, loyalty and devotion that makes Jamie such an appealing hero. And while Razor is loud and boisterous among friends, with Tori he is gentle and kind, patient beyond measure, and a beautiful surprise as a hero. Tori is damaged and sad. I must be tremendously naive, because I was shocked, horrified, and a little bit puzzled as to why anyone would subject another person to the acts she's endured in her former profession. If there are people in the world who enjoy that sort of thing, I'm very glad not to know them. So while I found the descriptions of Tori's past disturbing, and a little too much for me at times, it was overall a beautifully crafted love story.

I enjoyed this book, I liked Tori, I loved Razor, and I've already pre-ordered the next book in the set.

Another winner in this series!

Smoke Signals is the second book in the Tulsa Thunderbirds series and it is a raw and gritty tale that is also full of tenderness, understanding and hope.

What happens when you go to Vegas for your best friends wedding? You get married, right?! Well, in the case of Ray "Razor" Chambers, that's exactly what happens! Razor encounters a woman that he realizes is in way over her head and part of what he notices is a woman who needs help and compassion. Can he step in and give this woman the stability she needs?

Saying that Viktoriya Dubrovskaya has had a rough life is putting it mildly. Her father pushed her to leave her native Russia years ago for her own safety, but things have not gone as she had planned. She's been dealt a hand that forced her to use her body just to make ends meet and that has pushed her into pure survival mode. When she sets her sights on Razor in the casino in Vegas, she doesn't realize that this chance encounter is going to change her life in ways she could have never imagined.

After Razor marries Tori to help with her visa issues, he realizes that the scars she bears are deeper than he could have imagined. Can he break through the suit of armor she has armed herself with and can Tori let her past go in order to move forward?

I am so glad we were treated to Razor's story. I'm really not sure I could love Razor more than I do after finishing this book. We knew him as Babs' best friend, but he was so much more and this book was fantastic. Catherine Gayle is known for tackling issues in her books and this one is no different. There are serious issues dealt with in this book including trafficking, pornography and abuse, but they are handled with care and I applaud Catherine for continuing to focus on real-life issues.

About the Author
Carrie N. Baker is an Assistant Professor in the Program for the Study of Women and Gender at Smith College in Mount Berry, Georgia. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Yale University and a J.D. and Ph.D. in Women's Studies from Emory University. Her primary areas of research are women's legal history, gender and public policy, and women's social movements. The Women's Movement against Sexual Harassment (2008) won the National Women's Studies Association Sara A. Whaley Book Prize.

Great for agenda-setting discussion and introducing women's movement to students

I have used this book several times in class as a case study in agenda-setting. It's a great way to discuss the role of interest groups and social movements in the beginning of the policy process. It is also a good way to introduce students to the women's movement and discuss important issues of sexual harassment that students have or will have to deal with. It stops at Anita Hill, so some updating of the material is necessary, but my classes have had very interesting discussions about appropriate workplace behavior, patriarchy, and power differentials. The author does not hate men. That's a silly review. The author impeccably and thoroughly describes the movement. Readers can interpret on their own.

Helps in finding the words to describe and think about what it means to be part of humanity and of the universe

Not only for coaches! Starting with the authors' personal stories and moving through analysis of the human condition as a whole, this book is packed with inspiration and advice on how to move forward in relationships with others, in life and in work. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in self improvement - it is down to earth, non-pretentious and very, very readable.

The idea behind the book is that we start as a whole, part of One (or God, or the Universe) and our human experience is that we are fragmented, but it is now time for Integration, slowly moving back towards wholeness.

Integration will help you find the words to describe and think about what it means to be part of humanity and part of the universe.

This is a "must buy" for those wishing to more fully integrate body mind and spirit and move toward total consciousness. Ms. Betz masterfully brings together ancient and complex,current wisdom in a very understandable way. The book is very elegantly written and straightforward in its approach. Personal experiences are beautifully used to help define key concepts.
As a person who only buys e-books, I strongly encourage you to buy this in the paper format because you will want to underline passages, make notes in the margins and refer to it on a regular basis. This book will become a treasured companion on your life journey.
