When Paris Went Dark: The City of Light Under German Occupation, 1940-44, by Ronald Rosbottom

The Occupation of Paris told in a new light; the effects on its citizens as well as on the city itself. In May and June 1940 almost four million people fled Paris and its suburbs in anticipation of a German invasion. On June 14, the German Army tentatively entered the silent and eerily empty French capital. Without one shot being fired in its defence, the Occupation of Paris had begun. When Paris Went Dark tells the extraordinary story of Germany's capture and Occupation of Paris, Hitler's relationship with the City of Light, and its citizens' attempts at living in an environment that was almost untouched by war, but which had become uncanny overnight. Beginning with the Phoney War and Hitler's first visit to the city, acclaimed literary historian and critic Ronald Rosbottom takes us through the German Army's almost unopposed seizure of Paris, its bureaucratic re-organization of that city, with the aid of collaborationist Frenchmen, and the daily adjustments Parisians had to make to this new oppressive presence. Using memoirs, interviews and published eye-witness accounts, Rosbottom expertly weaves a narrative of daily life for both the Occupier and the Occupied. He shows its effects on the Parisian celebrity circles of Pablo Picasso, Simone de Beauvoir, Colette, Jean Cocteau, and Jean-Paul Sartre, and on the ordinary citizens of its twenty arrondissements. But Paris is the protagonist of this story, and Rosbottom provides us with a template for seeing the City of Light as more than a place of pleasure and beauty. (Publisher)

For lovers of Paris
By Fordy in France
I spent 20 years working in Paris and was unable to obtain the full story of all the problems of everyday folk in an occupied city. This book answers many of my
questions, which French people of my generation (I am in my late 70's) will avert an answer. That apart, it is a fascinating story, very well told.

Great book for adults & kids!
By Heather
This is a great book for adults & kids alike! The size of the book is a little bigger than a 5x7 photo. It has a nice thickness & quality about it. The cover is thicker & doesn't look like it would be damaged easily being bounced around in a book bag. The pages are a thicker quality, and glossy. The photos are amazing quality in the book. We got this book for my daughter's 8th birthday who loved the Smithsonian Nature Guide to Birds, so this is the equivalent for snakes & amphibians. Even though there are large words (genus, class, species etc) in the book, she is able to ask for help on them easily or skip over that section & read the other "blurbs" on the page about the animal. She mostly loves using the index section where she can think of a name of a snake & then find it & search for the page. It is broken out in sections keeping like animals together. There are main pages to each section explaining the differences of say amphibians before reading about the specific frogs themselves. This is a great book that you can read together or they can read independently. Honestly my husband & I end up flipping thru it many times after she goes to bed!

Goodbye Helter Skelter, by George Stimson

In August of 1969 the spectacular Tate-LaBianca murders rocked Los Angeles, the country, and the world. But even more shocking than those murders was the story behind them: the story of a homicidal maniac named Charles Manson, how he turned the sons and daughters of middle-class America into a Family of murderous slaves, and an insane plan to achieve world domination by sparking a race war called Helter Skelter.

But what if it was just a story?

Here is the first realistic and reasonable examination of the Tate-LaBianca murders and the true reasons behind them. Based on years of research and exclusive information from Charles Manson and many of his former and present friends, Goodbye Helter Skelter presents the conclusions of a long-time Manson associate -- conclusions that will likely change what you think about Charles Manson, his so-called Family, and some of the most infamous murders in the history of American crime.

Goodbye Helter Skelter includes material taken from hundreds of hours of tape-recorded conversations with Charles Manson. Never before has Manson's point of view been presented in such a complete and coherent format.

Manson as never before

An excellent job of providing balance to the helter skelter story. A lot of new information here which answers questions from another point of view. Despite the crimes Charlie Manson is a fascinating creature.

Hello Manson
By Dasein
After learning about ATWA, listening to and reading some of Manson's unedited thoughts, and feeling that there was clearly much more to the Manson saga than what the media has to say, I decided to pick up this book as part of a larger effort in understanding.

The image that emerges reminds me of a Cormac McCarthy novel, with the same bittersweet violence, passion, innocence, and madness, and always an underlying theme of tragedy. Manson is, and always will be a survivor. It would not be wrong to say that he has been subjected to continuous trauma and abuse since the day he came into the world. Do I believe he should be held responsible for the crimes that others professed to commit in his name? No, I don't. I don't think he's necessasarily a "good guy", either. On his level, I understand him, and perhaps even admire him for always sticking to his principles and codes, even when it lead him into situations that he could have otherwise avoided. He is right in remarking that he has always done the best with what he was given. I don't resonate with much of his philosophy simply because it is so damn wounded, while other aspects of his personality are crystal clear and finely attuned. No one is perfect, least of all ole' Charlie. He certainly doesn't deserve to be followed and revered for being anything other than human. But that's all he's been saying all along, anyhow.

A complex book, and a difficult subject, but one which I benefited from researching! Manson's voice is one that ought to be heard, if not simply because the vision behind it is so unique.

A fresh and well written perspective deserving on the case
By Robin Bailey
I've read most of the well known books on Manson and the Family. This one deserves its place as probably the most sober-minded examination of entire episode. Stimson, although clearly sympathetic to Manson and even a little biased due to their friendship, is an excellent writer who deconstructs the events and tells the story from each player's perspective using quotes from parole hearings, the trial, and their own autobiographical accounts. He does a surprisingly good job at putting forward the "brother" motive and finally putting to rest the "helter skelter" motive the prosecution used to convict Manson, et al.
Highly recommended for fans of true crime and, especially, Mansonology. This book is for the Manson case what Philip Sugden's Complete Jack the Ripper was for the that case. Or, at least as close as we will probably ever get to shedding the hoodoo boogeyman image of Manson in favor of evidence.
