When The Anatomy of Stretching was originally published, it was the first book to cover the topic of anatomy and physiology for stretching and flexibility. Since then others have been written, but no other book on the subject contains more examples of stretching exercises, or is able to take detailed anatomical information and present it in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. This is where The Anatomy of Stretching is different: it is able to take you inside the body and show you both the primary and secondary muscles in action during the stretching process. The Anatomy of Stretching looks at stretching from every angle, including: physiology and flexibility; the benefits of stretching; the different types of stretching; rules for safe stretching; and how to stretch properly. Aimed at fitness enthusiasts of any level, as well as fitness pros, The Anatomy of Stretching also focuses on which stretches are useful for the alleviation or rehabilitation of specific sports injuries. Plus in this second edition, over twenty new stretches have been added; the chapter on physiology has been expanded; more detailed anatomy has been included with each stretching chapter; the top five stretches for a range of sports and sports injuries are listed; and a new numbering system has been included to help reference each stretch.

Review
“My favorite part is the illustrations: they're black and white except for the muscle that's being stretched… If you're interested in stretching, improving your range of motion, improving your athletic ability by improving your body's muscles in repairing themselves, or simply to understand what each stretch does for your body, I highly recommend picking up this book. 5 stars.”

I ordered some of the sports related Anatomy books from Human Kinetics and this book. Though this book costs more, it is well worth it! Great for the artist, sculptor, physical therapist, massage therapist, nurse, doctor, athletes of every level or even the office worker with some aches and pains who wants to work intelligently with their health professional!
Each exercise shows well drawn featured muscles (that are being stretched) in color which contrasts nicely with the adjacent muscles drawn in black and white (yet still with good detail). Drawings are usually in two views as needed. Then below are sections: Technique, Muscles being Stretched, Sports that benefit from this stretch, Sports injury where stretch may be useful, Common problems and additonal information for performing this stretch correctly and reference to other Complementary Stretches in the book. It is so much easier to learn when the reader can experience the stretch while studying. Thank you. I wish I had this book while in college, but it's never to late to learn!
The only thing I didn't find was the origins, insertions and actions of each of the muscles. I found that online.

Good for beginners, but...
By Jon Ludbetter
This book gives a great introduction to different schools of stretching and some relevant biology and bio-mechanics. Neither of these are really integrated into the remainder of the text, and the illustrations of the biology relevant to muscle firing are inadequate. Much more helpful and relevant would be an address of nutrition and stretching (drinking water isn't even mentioned).
Walker shines in his personal experience, which can weigh in heavily against laboratory research from scientific journals. His expertise on how long to hold stretches and the benefits of different kinds of stretching is won over years of experience. Walker is a genuine synthesist, taking from everything useful. While he shows some familiarity with contemporary scientific studies, he's not engaging with a depth or aptitude that warrants the title of the book. For example, he cites a 1970's study of muscle firing and ignores contemporary work of fascial tension altogether. It would be wonderful to team him up with a scientist more abreast of recent directions in the literature.
The practical section is straight-forward and clear. Particularly helpful are the pointers to complementary stretches for muscle groups, but it's curious that he didn't include antagonist stretches given their importance.
The real disappointments of the book for me are as follows. 1) Details, man! Despite emphasizing the importance of a number of approaches to stretching, he doesn't emphasize dynamic or muscularly engaged stretching in his examples. He rarely mentions engaging the muscles being stretched. This leaves us with yet another book of largely passive stretching. The angles of the stretches are often not specified enough to target the muscle groups, nor does he give adequate proprioceptive cues to alert you when you are or are not accessing the sweet spot. 2) There is no choreography for a sequence that would hit all major muscle groups. Walker does give a small chart of important stretches depending upon the kind of activity you do, which is of some use. 3) The stretches do not blow my mind. There are very few that I've not seen before, and he'd do well to borrow more from yoga. 4) I'm left wondering whether his reliance on passive stretching will render muscles that are indeed elongated but not integrated.

A Good Resource for Stretches and Stretching Technique
By Robert C. Toothman
This book is overall very helpful. There are 135 color coded stretches categorized by muscle group(s). The first chapter is information of anatomy of muscles and kinesiology. The second chapter has information on different types of stretching techniques and workout structure. The remaining chapters go on to describe all of the stretches with pictures, description of techniques, muscles stretched, sports and injuries the stretches may be helpful for and references to complementary stretches. It ends with the top 5 stretches for each sports injury and sport and a glossary of different types of injuries. I am giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 because I would not recommend following his 4 point warmup structure before working out. I found it way too time consuming and it goes against what most physical therapists would recommend for the beginning of a workout. The information of stretching technique and the 135 stretches were very helpful. For that reason, I would recommend this book to anyone as a good resource for their workout routine.
