The narrative that emerges is a fine accomplishment, tying together the horrific stories of countless children against a merciless landscape of undersupplied refugee camps, belligerent authority figures and the constant threat of renewed violence. London tells of children forced into prostitution and military service, Burmese refugees unable to leave their dreary Bangkok apartments for fear of deportation and other tragic consequences of conflict; the stories are chilling and London is an able interviewer, getting children to open up by joining their soccer games and getting them to draw pictures. London began his project at age 21, and has a neophyte's penchant for self-regard and melodrama ("She is looking though her life, to some place else, some future bliss that is forever out of reach"); letting the stories speak for themselves would have bolstered their resonance. Insightful, important and very moving

I was looking for a book about the experiences of children during wartime and found this on Amazon. It was exactly what I was looking for. London's writing was empathetic, engaging and respectful of what the kids had to say. He was honest about what he learned and the preconceptions he was forced to abandon along the way. I liked that he went to war zones on three separate continents and reported stories from wars both well known (Bosnia) and not so well known (the Congo). Moving and insightful. Highly recommended.

Amazing -- full of emotion

I bought this book for a project in graduate school. Of all the books I read during the 2-year program, this was my favorite. It is amazingly touching and full of all sorts of emotions. The center section with pictures and drawings really makes the stories come alive. I would love to meet the author and talk about his work even more.

Just be aware, this is not a novel, nor would I recommend it for anyone with a weak stomach or anyone under 18 years old. The stories can be very intense!

Worth reading

A good basic read around some of the worlds most current conflicts (Burma, Bosnia, Congo), with some basic history that the world hasn't changed that much since roman times. I would recommend it as an introduction to how war affects children and their families and some of the history of what these conflicts have been based around.

It has made me want to improve my world histroy further as I'm not sure too many people have a grip on the actual vs what the general media feeds us.

About the Author
Ernest Callenbach, who also wrote Ecotopia, grew up in rural central Pennsylvania, attended the University of Chicago, and has lived in Berkeley, California, since 1954. He edited natural history, science, art, and film books for the University of California Press. He now devotes full time to writing (his newest book is Ecology: A Pocket Guide) and lecturing; he gardens ardently, has two compost bins, and walks a lot.

A Green Globe

Ecotopia Emerging is a novel of ideas written by Ernest Callenbach. The main idea of this book is, Callenbach uses a setting like our modern day civilized world, with pollutions, contaminations of streams, rivers, and ground waters by industrial toxic wastes. Doubtfully, after several years of this continuous contaminated way of living, he came up with a powerful and dedicated movement to preserve our future generations. In the book, the used Vera Allwen, a legislator as the organizer and the leader of the movement, assisted by a devoted Marissa D'Amico, her mother Laura, who organizes a group of Cancer victims to fight against plants making Carcinogenic chemicals. Finally, Lou Swift, a bright physics student who invented a unique Solar cell that would end the dependence on polluting fossil energy. Never the less, this movement was also joined by thousand of people, mostly commoners, who shared the same vision and values of their natural and traditional environment.

In the first three chapters of Ecotopia Emerging, the movement came up with rules similar to the Ten Commandments and the Bill of Rights called the "No More" list. It reads: No extinction of species, nuclear plants, manufacturing of carcinogenic or mutagenic substances. No adulterating in food, no discrimination of sex, race, age, religion or ethnic group. No private cars, and advertiser controllers, no limited liability corporations, no absentee ownership, no growth in population. Some of the rules were thought to be considered controversial in the public eyes, by some of the movement's members. For example, no private cars and growth in population. However, they stick to their rules and went to work by exposing government and private industries' evil deeds to the public for not making the earth a safer place to dwell. Drastically, the movement was popular due to it appearances on major TVs and in newspapers. In fact, they made their won TV channel for the convenience of their members who were in remote places

Lou was a bright physics student who love dating, having sex, and working on her cell. One day after school, she opened her lab door and discovered that one of her cell had magical ingredients, which was rain and seawater, chlorides, and bromides. She couldn't find the replica of that exact magical cell, after series of experiments. She became frustrated and kicked the legs of the cell. She opened the cell's hut to look for any damage; one of the switches had fallen closed. Then she remembered that when she discovered the original cell, a switch had also fallen closed also, and one of the cells had salt water in it, it creates electrolytic reaction like chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and other compounds. Finally she did the experiment over, and then came up with the results like the original cell. She rushed the news to her father, Roger, he was proud of her. Since Lou wanted the cell to be do-it-yourself, to the public, it scared the hell out of companies who had been spending money on similar research and couldn't find the answer. Many threats from the FBI, oil companies were to Lou and her family.

In the end, after continuous battle with the government and other organizations, the survivalist party finally separated themselves from the union, but it wasn't easy, the only reason why they won and successfully gained their independent country was the U.S military troops that were camped in Nevada was moved to the Middle East, due to immediate needs for troops over there.

Get Off the Grid

In Ecotopia Emerging it's important for the United States to find an alternative energy source because oil will soon run out. Instead of trying to find new sources, the U.S. goes to war with other places to fight over their oil. But even if they succeeded that oil will eventually run out as well. There are characters in Ecotopia Emerging who take a stand and think outside the box. They create phenomenal alternative energy sources that could get the whole world "off the grid."

The main alternative energy source spoke of in the book is a solar cell created by Lou Swift. Lou is just a high school student who is very interested in biology. She wanted to create a source of energy which would be inexpensive and could be used by all people. In several months the cell is complete and Lou realizes that it will be very helpful in assisting others with "getting off the grid".

Another energy source used in this book was very interesting and creative. Ralph Burns, who is a farmer, was tired of high gasoline prices. It was becoming more and more expensive to operate his equipment. He comes up with to use a mixture of alcohol to run his machines rather than gasoline. After some research at a local university he put his plan into action along with some friends. The plan worked and now Burns and others who completed this project are now gas free!

Windmills are used in current times but also in this novel. People have often over looked windmills but they are a very adequate energy source. They run off of wind which is abundant all around the world, some place more than others. Windmills are also pollution free which is very environmental friendly.

These are only three other means of energy but with creative minds and research lot of other energy sources can be created as well. All it takes is time and effort. If a seventeen year old could do it why can others? The benefits would be beyond measure and the environment would definitely be cleaner and safer.

A Visionary's Hope For a Brighter Future

Perhaps the most valuable aspects of Earnest Callenbach's novel Ecotopia Emerging are the points at which he expresses ideas that would facilitate a better society. Throughout the book, he focuses on the Ecotopians use of alternative energy and transportation. His ideas are almost non-fictional and could very well apply to modern day society.

The novel begins with Lou Swift, a 17 year old female, discovering that she has invented a solar cell. Callenbach uses the solar cell as the answer to many of modern society's problems concerning the waste of electricity and other natural resources. He also proposes that we use windmills and hydroelectricity. In these respects, Callenbach is prophetic.

Throughout the novel, italicized paragraphs denote Callenbach's real purposes. He uses them to go beyond the view of a fictional world and apply his visions to society as we know it. If the italicized parts of the novel were left alone, Ecotopia Emerging would be closer to a manifesto than to a novel. But this is not the case; Callenbach gives us a very clear background for his ideas. He uses the most "green" part of the country as his setting. Still today, northern California, Oregon, and Washington are the most liberal parts of the country. In fact, it seems very likely that this part of the country might someday rise up against the rest of the country. Ecotopia is not entirely composed of radical environmentalists. Characters such as Whitey Whitehead assume the role of what most people would call a typical American. Every story needs an antagonist, and besides the national government, Whitey Whitehead is just that. He is enraged at the idea of giving up his right to drive. While crop-dusting, he pretends he is fighting again in the Vietnam War. He lacks respect for women, the environment, and the rest of the world in general.

One might find this novel slightly preachy, but Callenbach gets his point across without boring the reader. He is inventive, realistic (most of the time), and has written a novel that0 America could learn a lot from. Ecotopia Emerging is a strong novel with morally-pleasant themes and ideas that deserve a chance.

About the Author
Trevor Kletz, OBE, D.Sc., F.Eng., a process safety consultant, has published more than a hundred papers and nine books on loss prevention and process safety, including most recently Lessons From Disaster: How Organizations Have No Memory and Accidents Recur and Computer Control and Human Error. His experience includes thirty-eight years with Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., where he served as a production manager and safety adviser in the petrochemical division, and membership in the department of chemical engineering at Loughborough University, Leicestershire, England. Involved in safety?You should read T.A.Kletz!

I am surprised to see so few reviews for T.A.Kletz books.

If you are dealing with potentially hazardous installations or systems, and not only if you are an engineer, you should read some Kletz. Allways hinging his books around his very message, T.A.Kletz constantly gives interesting practical examples and fine advice, from his 40 years own experience. He 'dismounts' accidents, their causes, superficial and underlying down to the detail. He shows the different aspects of human/organisational responsibility in accidents and their prevention. After going through one of his books, "human error" never reads the same again. In "Learning from Accidents", he does follow that methodology for about ten famous accidents, various generic accidents and many incidents. He shows how major accidents come out of sequences of minor defficiencies and are helped by sleeping faults, poor management, poor procedures, poor incident reporting,... poor design... and poor remembrance of previous accidents/incidents.

If we don't learn from our mistakes, why bother making them?

A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

Forever young

This sophisticated but crude novel is the story of man's eternal desire for perennial youth, of our vanity and frivolity, of the dangers of messing with the laws of life. Just like "Faust" and "The immortal" by Borges.
Dorian Gray is beautiful and irresistible. He is a socialité with a high ego and superficial thinking. When his friend Basil Hallward paints his portrait, Gray expresses his wish that he could stay forever as young and charming as the portrait. The wish comes true.
Allured by his depraved friend Henry Wotton, perhaps the best character of the book, Gray jumps into a life of utter pervertion and sin. But, every time he sins, the portrait gets older, while Gray stays young and healthy. His life turns into a maelstrom of sex, lies, murder and crime. Some day he will want to cancel the deal and be normal again. But Fate has other plans.
Wilde, a man of the world who vaguely resembles Gray, wrote this masterpiece with a great but dark sense of humor, saying every thing he has to say. It is an ironic view of vanity, of superflous desires. Gray is a man destroyed by his very beauty, to whom an unknown magical power gave the chance to contemplate in his own portrait all the vices that his looks and the world put in his hands. Love becomes carnal lust; passion becomes crime. The characters and the scenes are perfect. Wilde's wit and sarcasm come in full splendor to tell us that the world is dangerous for the soul, when its rules are not followed. But, and it's a big but, it is not a moralizing story. Wilde was not the man to do that. It is a fierce and unrepressed exposition of all the ugly side of us humans, when unchecked by nature. To be rich, beautiful and eternally young is a sure way to hell. And the writing makes it a classical novel. Come go with Wotton and Wilde to the theater, and then to an orgy. You'll wish you age peacefully.

A Thrilling Read

I first was introduced to Dorian Gray through a book club, and I thought 'Oh no, Oscar Wilde, here I go, another hard to read boring society book". I was wrong. Within the first two chapters of Dorian Gray I was intrigued and fascinated. This book deals with several issues that are as important now as they are today: the way our culture worships beauty and youth, an admiration that boarders on homosexual love, virtues, the differences between men and women, and what art is and what makes it truly art. Dorian Gray is a beautiful young man, who sees a portrait of himself and says "How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young...If only it were the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the portrait to grow old...I would give my soul for that!" The book takes off from there, leading you from a small theater to great parties. While younger readers may find some of the wording as tough as an old gym shoe, anyone older than 13 with an interest in mystery, romance, and how society runs, will find this a pleasurable and haunting read.

Be careful what you wish for

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a mesmerizing read dominated by two amazing personalities. Dorian Gray is certainly interesting, but I was much more impressed by his friend and mentor Lord Henry Wotton. Dorian is a perfectly nice, well-meaning young man when we first meet him in the studio of the painter Basil Hallward. Hallward in fact is so drawn to the youth that he draws his greatest inspiration from painting him and just being with him. It is the influence of Hallward's friend Lord Henry which leads to Gray's downfall. There are few characters in literature as decadent, witty, and somehow enchanting as Lord Henry. He is never at a loss for words, fatalistic observations of life and people, sarcastic philosophical musings, and brilliantly devious ideas. Among his world of social decadents and artistic do-nothings, his charm remains redoubtable and highly sought-after. Gray immediately falls under his spell, soon devoting himself to living life to its fullest and enjoying his youth and beauty to the utmost. He solemnly wishes that he could remain young and beautiful forever, that Hallward's exquisite picture of him should bear the marks of age and debauchery rather than himself. To his surprise and ultimate horror, he finds his wish fulfilled. Small lines and creases first appear in the portrait, but after he cruelly breaks the heart of an unfortunate young actress who then takes her own life, the first real signs of horror and blood manifest themselves on his portrait. His love for the ill-fated Sibyl Vane is a sordid, heartbreaking tale, and it marks the culmination of his descent into debauchery. He frequents opium dens and houses of ill repute, justifying all of his worst actions to himself, while the influence of Lord Henry continues to work its black magic on his soul. He hides his increasingly grotesque portrait away in an upstairs room, sometimes going up to stare at it and take pleasure in the fact that it rather than he bears the stains of his iniquities. In time, his obsession with his secret grows, and he is constantly afraid that it will be discovered by someone. For eighteen years he lives in this manner, moving among the members of his society as a revered figure who magically retains his youth, but eventually he begins to see himself as he really is and to curse the portrait, blaming its magic for his miserable life of ill-begotten pleasures and loss of moral character. The final pages are well-written, and the climax is eminently satisfying.
Exhibiting the undeniable influence of the French Decadence movement of the late 19th century, this wonderful novel serves as a morality play of sorts. One can understand why its unique nature upset a British society emerging from the social constraints of Victorianism, but this reader is hard pressed to see why this novel proved so damaging to Wilde's eventual imprisonment and punishment. Dorian Gray is no hero, nor does his ultimate internal struggles and yearnings for rebirth inspire one to engage in the sort of life he himself eventually came to regret. The only "dangerous" character in this novel is Lord Henry; his delight in working his evil influence on others as a type of moral experiment and the silver-tongued charm he exploits to aid him in such misbegotten quests have the potential to do harm to a vulnerable mind such as that of Dorian Gray. Lord Henry's evil genius makes him much more interesting than his disciple Dorian Gray. By today's standards, this book is not shocking, and indeed it is much more dangerous to censor work such as this than it is to read it. This book in eminently quotable, and it still manages to cast a magical spell over readers of this day and age. Quite simply, The Picture of Dorian Gray deserves a place on the shelf of the world's greatest literature.
