Good Collection of Vietnam War Articles and Book Excerpts

This is a good collection of articles and book excerpts covering why the U.S. got involved in Indochina, what happened on the battlefield, the role of the press, the successes and failures of the anti-war movement and the long-term consequences of the war. There are mostly good articles and excerpts and only a few that didn't carry their weight. Many of the excerpts gave me a sneak preview of important books on the Vietnam war for future reading.

About the Author
Craig M. Wright received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1966 and his Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard University in 1972. He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past forty years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is currently the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music. At Yale, Wright's courses include his perennially popular introductory course, Listening to Music (also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses); his large lecture course Exploring the Nature of Genius; and most recently his Coursera course Introduction to Classical Music. He is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach. Wright has also been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago. And in 2010 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee, banjo player Steve Martin. In addition to LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, EIGHTH EDITION, Wright has also published THE ESSENTIAL LISTENING TO MUSIC, SECOND EDITION; LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Schirmer Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs. Li Xiujung (China Conservatory, Beijing) and Yu Zhigang (Central Conservatory, Beijing), both of whom worked with Wright at Yale; and MUSIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, MEDIA UPDATE (Schirmer Cengage Learning, 2010), with coauthor Bryan Simms. He is currently at work on a volume titled MOZART'S BRAIN: EXPLORING THE NATURE OF GENIUS.

Brand new without all materials

The Digital Card that came with the book was for music download only not the actual code needed to access course materials. Charged $98 for a brand new book without the proper cards to access the course. The course code is another $98. What a waste.

Undeniably Thorough and Accurate

This is the most comprehensive and useful reference book I own. Every engineer and technical person should own one!

But be warned, if you're not already an technical person/engineer and/or genius, it may be a little hard to follow (very involved calculus topics are covered in just a few pages, for instance). If you're looking for something to use as a quick reference for all the subjects you took long ago, this is it - if you're looking to learn something new in great detail, buy a subject-specific textbook first.

Every engineering freshman needs a copy of this book before starting college.

Like I said, if you're an engineering major, this is THE book to have before you start your freshman year. I see that there's a 2009 edition, but it has quite a few less pages. I'd stick with this earlier edition, or mine. I had the 1975 edition when I started at R.I.T. in 1976 in mechanical engineering. All the basics are in this one book. There are all the necessary unit-conversion tables in what has to be the best layout I've ever seen; all the tables are very easy to use and EVERY possible conversion you need is there. There are all the basic mathematic formulas (e.g., areas & volumes of all geometric shapes) also in the best and easiest-to-use layout I've ever seen. And that's just the start. Just about every engineering topic is covered to some degree. Like another reviewer said, if you have just one handbook, this is the one to have. Actually, when I was in college, I was just about the only engineering student with a copy of this handbook. It's as if it's a well-kept secret. I was a mechanical engineering student, so I also had Mark's handbook for ME's. If you do get a copy, don't go telling all your classmates that you have it. Keep it to yourself, and hide it in your desk. I'm serious! Make it your "ace in the hole." That's what I did, and I can't imagine going through engineering college without a copy! My grades directly reflected the fact that I had this book. And, once you're out in the working world, this book will continue to help you. This book is my "first-go-to-book" whenever I'm faced with something new. And when you're out in the world, you'll be faced with new and interesting things all the time. Why not read up on things in Eshback before you go into a meeting with the big-shots and wow 'em? If you're an ME, your list of reference books should read: 1) Eshback Handbook, 2) Marks' Handbook for ME's, 3) Basic Dictionary (e.g., Webster's Collegiate), 4) Basic Thesaurus (ditto on Webster's), 5) Machinery's Handbook, 6) Dictionary of Technical Words & Terms (e.g., McGraw-Hill). Remember, you need the latest edition of any course book, but your reference books don't have to be the newest. College is expensive, and any of these reference books can be 20+ years old and still do a great job in helping you out. After all, engineering doesn't necessarily change all that much from year to year. The basics are the basics in engineering, whether it's 1975 or 2015. Thanks for reading my review!

This book is a must

Angel has written another wonderful book. Although novels set in the Victorian era aren't my favorite, I always enjoy her writing. Philip's Rules was more enjoyable than most Victorian I have read. The characters were wonderfully developed and engaging. We had visits from favorites from her Domestic Discipline series as well, and, while it isn't required to have read those novels first to enjoy this one, it is a pleasure getting some followup with those characters. Chapters 12 and 13 and Cordelia's sneaky, "wicked" stepdaughter Gabrielle's execution of a cunning scheme in the final chapter are drama filled and highly entertaining.

If you enjoy Angel even slightly, this book is a must. If you enjoy romance, this book is a must. If you enjoy spanking, this book is a must. If you are looking for an enjoyable erotic novel, this book is a must. I highly recommend it.

Great Read

Golden Angel has presented us with a new series, Bridal Discipline. A spin-off her Domestic Discipline series. Duos from those books weave through the pages of Philips Rules. Older and wiser they try to steer Cordelia , a widow marrying Philip, and her step-daughter Gabrielle through the Ton. Gabrielle is bent on giving everyone fits and watching every move she makes at her coming out season and every party they are invited to so she will stay out of trouble and not ruin herself. Unfortunately, she is just as determined to have her own way. Needless to say, she finds herself with a hot bottom as does Cordelia for not controlling her. Read this book to find how things are resolved for all involved, and for insight into the next book in this series.

Angel writes Happy Ending books which are well written and interesting page turners. Give this a look.

Writing keeps growing as the universe she created grows

What can I say oh my god this is beautiful.

The story is amazing and I can totally relate to Cornelia and her struggles with her relationship with Gabrielle. To then be immersed in the world of balls and the rituals of courting your just transported to another world.

While the main story is amazing I think the beauty of this book is the how much it has you anticipating the next one, Felix is a complex character and the last line in the book leads you gasping and shell shocked and now I just have to know how their relationship works out.

Angel I think your work is getting better and better each time you put your finger to the keyboard, it's beautiful and sets up so many more books that this world is going to keep growing, and I for one can't wait

Focusing on the numerous civil conflicts that have occurred throughout the world since the Second World War, Bill Kissane bridges this gap, asking what the recent social science literature adds to what we already know about civil war, but also how insights from the historical literature, from the ancient Greeks onwards, can help explain the violent experience of so many parts of the world since 1945.

About the Author

Bill Kissane, political scientist and historian, is a Reader in Politics at the London School of Economics, where he is a member of the Conflict Research Group. He is the author of several books on civil-war related subjects, including a pioneering study of the Irish civil war, The Politics of the Irish Civil War (2005), also published by Oxford University Press, and has held visiting positions at University College Dublin, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Bielefeld, and the National Humanities Centre in North Carolina.

About the Author

Frédéric Delavier is a gifted artist with an exceptional knowledge of human anatomy. He studied morphology and anatomy for five years at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied dissection for three years at the Paris Faculté de Médecine.

 

The former editor in chief of the French magazine PowerMag, Delavier is currently a journalist for the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle and a contributor to several other muscle publications, including Men's Health Germany.

Delavier won the French powerlifting title in 1988 and makes annual presentations on the sport applications of biomechanics at conferences in Switzerland. His teaching efforts have earned him the Grand Prix de Techniques et de Pédagogie Sportive. Delavier lives in Paris, France.

Great way to learn muscle anatomy and exercise form at the same time

I owned the first edition of Strength Training Anatomy (blue cover) for nearly 15 years and I've been recommending this book to my clients for that long as well. I decided to pick up the new 3rd edition (red cover) to update my library and also to write this review.

This book's concept and contents have been imitated many times, but Delavier's is the original and the best.

In a nutshell, Strength Training Anatomy is a book of expertly drawn illustrations of the human body (over 600) performing weight training exercises. The primary muscles being worked are colored in red and clearly labeled. The bones, muscle fibers and muscular attachments are also beautifully illustrated.

The book is divided into seven sections: Arms, Shoulders, Chest, Back, Legs, Buttocks and Abdomen. No space is wasted with introductions - the book jumps right into arms in the opening pages. A page is devoted to each exercise, and a small amount of text accompanies each illustration, explaining proper form and giving additional tips or precautions. Sidebars show exercise variations, start and finish positions and additional details (such as deep muscle anatomy with the exact muscle tendon insertions on the bone).

The length is 192 pages, so it's not overwhelming - it's very digestible, yet it's also very thorough in terms of the number of exercises covered. All the major and important barbell and dumbbell exercises are included. In addition, you'll learn a variety of cable exercises and a handful of common and useful machine exercises.

I don't think there's any reader from any demographic or experience level that won't benefit from owning this book. It will be appreciated by all ages and by men and women, especially since both male and female models are used in the illustrations. For beginners, this could be a training instruction "bible" for learning how to do the exercises properly and understanding exactly what muscles are working.

Some people might suggest this book is only suited for the beginner, but I think advanced trainees and even fitness professionals will find this book valuable as a reference guide and may even want to keep it on their shelf within arms reach.

This material is not just for bodybuilders, but as a bodybuilder myself, I think there is another potential benefit of this book that I haven't seen anyone else mention. Bodybuilders need to develop the ability to visualize muscle actions and learn how to enhance their mind to muscle connection. Studying the drawings and looking at the muscles engaged, the direction of the fibers and where they insert and attach could be a great tool to help with these mental skills.

As for the 3rd edition, there is new material in this update, including much more content (it's longer, with more exercises). There are also new sections on stretching and avoiding common injuries.

The publisher, Human Kinetics consistently puts out some great titles, and this is among the best of them. The book quality is excellent, including the cover, binding, paper, and again, the illustrations on every page are fantastic. The author is clearly a skilled artist who also has a medical-level understanding of the human body.

Potential readers should know before buying, that this book does not contain workout programs - it focuses solely on individual exercise instruction and exercise anatomy. That doesn't detract from the value in my opinion, it actually helps keeps this volume concise and focused on one thing: strength training exercises and anatomy.

On that note, again, this is not a text-heavy book and while you do get an explanation and illustration of each exercise, you don't get
in-depth written details on biomechanics and muscle actions. You're mainly getting exercise instruction and muscle anatomy lessons.

Also, this IS an anatomy book, so if looking at body parts and human anatomy bothers you, then you might want to take a pass. (All body parts are depicted, in places).

In summary, this book deserves its 5-star ratings, and its sales and longevity in the fitness book market are not surprising.

A dissapointment after the original masterpiece.

I was disappointed in this book. I was expecting another masterpiece like the original 'Strength Training Anatomy'. Instead, this book is disjointed and confusing.

A lot of the illustrations were taken from Strength Training Anatomy. There's even one drawing with a description that gives a correction about the form - instead of making a new drawing, the writer just lazily reused a drawing from the previous book.

Most of the new illustrations are mediocre photos. Also, this book focuses entirely on dumbbell training, no barbell work is included.

I feel like some of the workout routines are interesting and I will be trying them. Still, this book rates only a 'meh' due to the sloppy way it was constructed.

Amazing resource!

First off, since you're here, I'm assuming you have some interest in strength training. If you had to mull it over or answered the obvious 'duh bro' then get this book!
I've been into strength training for 10 years and with all the research, planning, tracking I was still missing a lot more than I thought. Strength Training Anatomy is packed with information on every page. Showing you a huge amount of movements and exercises. Not only does it go through proper form but it explains everything. This really helped me at creating my own plans. But the Illustrations...they are just as good as the writing. Showing the high and low points of muscle stretching in amazing detail. I've passed this down to buddies of mine, family members...and they were all impressed!
This is a resource to help you GROW. Both in knowledge and in size! Whether your goals are bulking and packing on size, or losing weight the way everyone should, this book will help you take it to the next level!

He keeps things very clear and doesn't bog the reader down in complex variations. The explanations are good and the conclusions at the end of each chapter are particularly welcome. Bologans explanation of what White is trying to accomplish will be just as valuable to the layman as the concrete lines he offers. An excellent and up-to-date work. Bologan, with his clear explanation of the aims of both players, has written something that will continue to be useful even after some of his analytical suggestions are inevitably refuted. A strong GM's guide to Catalan opening theory

Victor Bologan is clearly one of the hardest-working GMs in the world of chess. He did not attain the 2700+ club until the age of 34, and continues to defy all the stereotypes about youth and chess strength by growing even stronger; in his 40s, he is currently rated 2734. A key to his strength is his hard work on openings, as evidenced by the long list of well-received opening resources he has authored (7 DVDs and 4 books). Bologan has a lot experience with the Catalan (1. d4 Nf3 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5 4. g3); the (incomplete) online games database at chesstempo.com shows him with a record of +4 -2 = 10 playing both white and black. As you would expect, then, his recommendations and analysis in this book make another fine contribution to opening theory that will help strong players play either side of the Catalan with confidence.

The Catalan is a highly concrete opening: in some tabiyas white sheds a pawn for strong piece coordination and queenside attacking chances; in others he might opt for a better pawn structure, more space, or faster development. Accordingly, Bologan doesn't attempt to provide an overview of white's (or black's) goals, but instead jumps right into the analysis of variations from the beginning and never lets up. It's not just a database dump, though, as he gives generous text to describing the goals of various moves, and why certain move orders are preferred. Bologan structures the book in 18 chapters based on the black player's reply, with a chapter each on the Queen's Indian setup (4...b6), the Tarrasch (4...c5), the Triangle (4...c6), 2 chapters on the bishop check 4...Bb4+, 7 chapters on the pawn grab 4...dxc4, and 6 chapters on the modest bishop development 4...Be7.

You should be aware that this book is a pure discussion of opening theory: Bologan does not present any annotated games or discuss typical middlegame or endgame themes. As a result, I cannot recommend this book for players below expert level (Elo 2000) who want more than just the pure analysis of opening variations. Bologan does not discuss any key GM games where the black player has equalized easily (such as Nakamura - Carlsen, Tal Memorial 2012 or Ivanchuk - Gelfand, Tata Steel 2012); instead he simply recommends a different white move from a recent game between lesser known titled players that will sidestep black's strategem. Also, while Bologan's analysis is thorough and--so far as this club player can tell--accurate, he does not suggest any theoretical novelties.

A word or two about the book's cover: Bologan describes the Catalan as a way to get a mild, positionally subtle opening edge without giving black too many dynamic chances. In other words, a chess player might describe the Catalan as "deep" or "subtle" rather than "powerful." Of course, deep and subtle doesn't sell as many copies! Also, Bologan's introduction belies the subtitle ("a complete repertoire for white"), in that he explains that you will have to learn from other resources how to play against Black openings like the Bogo-Indian, the Queen's Indian, the King's Indian, the Benoni, the Benko Gambit, etc.

Bottom line: given the high quality of Bologan's analysis, you should buy this book if you're a strong player who wants an excellent guide to Catalan opening theory.

Very Good, but Missing Some Depth

Victor Bologan is a very strong player and his experience and knowledge really show in the writing of this book. His recommendations are always top notch, and align very closely with the lines played by the elite. Being that said, this work is not as good as he could have done, because he does not provide as much explanation, and he does not provide much original analysis. To be more specific, there are some critical lines (like the main line starting with 4...Bb4+) where he reaches one of Black's toughest continuations, and then provides zero original analysis. This is the reason I only give him 4 stars, rather than 5.

To summarize, I think an opening book should

1.- Talk about a good opening
2.- provide the best lines and give objective evaluations
3.- Provide original analysis when needed.

I think this book does very well on points 1 & 2, but not so well on point 3, which is the reason I only give him 4 stars.
