Should be on every professionals desk
By Jerry
I have practiced adolescent psychiatry for 36 years and this is the most helpful book I have come across in many years. There is a wealth of very practical examples of what to do when faced with a patient that you can not quite put your finger on the diagnosis. Dividing the diagnosis of Autism Spectum Disorders by age group is a brilliant stroke that is enormously helpful. What may seem normal in an 8 year old, certainly may not seem normal in a 16 year old. Each "stage of life" is given it's own section as the issues can present quite differently given the age of the person. This is the first author I am aware of that specifically addresses the very difficult issues involved in diagnosing teens and especially older adults. Dr. Gallo clearly has a lot of experience in diagnosing autism and I find myself reaching for his book when I have questions about diagnosing someone with the disorder. It is an "up to the minute" book that will be very helpful to parents, educators and practicing professionals.

Very Comprehensive Narrative Book
By Susan
As a mental health professional and a mother of a son on the spectrum, I found Dr. Gallo's book to be a great resource in creating helpful impressions of the nuances found on the spectrum. I appreciated Dr. Gallo's narrative style which felt more like a conversation with a knowledgeable friend rather than a textbook read. As parents of autistic children, we review in our minds many unanswered questions about what behaviors or symptoms mean, and how to interpret them. This book presented a means to greater understanding of the spectrum and how it translates into what is observed in our children. I would recommend this book to any parent or professional who interacts with children on the spectrum.

A book for everyone's nightstand
By TechPerson
An excellent read for the average person who seeks to understand autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Gallo has managed to explain a complex issue in a way that everyone can comprehend--not the usual, boring textbook of technical terms. This information, presented in an easy to read style, will be extremely helpful to families and friends trying to cope with these difficult issues.

The Quiet Guitar Builder
By A Customer
"Classic Guitar Making", by Arthur E. Overholtze, is a clearly written guide that teaches how to build a classical guitar. The author's careful descriptions will instill confidence in the beginning guitar builder, and plentiful shop talk will interest luthiers. The author's humble anecdotes entertain and warn one of the construction mistakes he has made. The chapters walk the reader step-by-step through every phase of guitar construction, from the choice of wood to the finished guitar. "Classic Guitar Making" is a wonderful book by a wonderful teacher.

My Grandfather
By Victor L. Stiles
I am the Grandson of Arthur E. Overholtzer, my mother is Shirley, the youngest of Art's kids. I have his last completed guitar, #16, finished in 1973. All my Aunts have one of his masterpieces, and even the Grandchampion, #9. My Grandfather was a woodworker all his life, and most of his family is still into woodworking or some sort of construction around Modesto, CA. There are many people that love my Grandfathers book for how in depth it goes to explain just how and why you need to 'do this'. In his life, he built violins and a base guitar, and always wanted the absolute best sound from all of them.

THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE (NO JOKE) #BLESSED
By Christian
My story begins with a plane crash. I was stranded on an island somewhere off the coast of New Jersey. With no food, I slowly started to starve and descend into madness. That's when the hallucinations began. Benny, the Comicstorian appeared before me. "Buy my book." I heard him say. "It will change your life forever." These words are what kept me alive. With a newfound purpose to buy Benny's book, I was able to experience something no man ever had before. I experienced Ronald. Ronald was the speaking, trenchcoat wearing monkey who visited me in my sleep. "Pst." whispered Ronald, as he opened his coat to reveal the books inside. "Gimme yo money, I gots the good stuff." I had no money, so I proceeded to pay for the book in "other ways." After being handed the book, I ate it. I was no longer hungry, and haven't been hungry since. I finally had enough energy to build a raft to get home. The journey home was difficult. I didn't think I'd survive the Great Splooge Storm of Rob, but luckily, I did. After countless months at sea, I had finally returned home to my wife and kids. Unfortunately, they all died while I was gone, but hey, at least they all died while I was gone.

Retrieving Realism, by Hubert Dreyfus, Charles Taylor

“A picture held us captive,” writes Wittgenstein in the Philosophical Investigations, describing the powerful image of mind that underlies the modern epistemological tradition from Descartes onward. Retrieving Realism offers a radical critique of the Cartesian epistemic picture that has captivated philosophy for too long and restores a realist view affirming our direct access to the everyday world and to the physical universe.

According to Descartes, knowledge exists in the form of ideas in the mind that purportedly represent the world. This “mediational” epistemology―internal ideas mediating external reality―continues to exert a grip on Western thought, and even philosophers such as Quine, Rorty, and Davidson who have claimed to refute Descartes remain imprisoned within its regime. As Hubert Dreyfus and Charles Taylor show, knowledge consists of much more than the explicit representations we formulate. We gain knowledge of the world through bodily engagement with it―by handling things, moving among them, responding to them―and these forms of knowing cannot be understood in mediational terms. Dreyfus and Taylor also contest Descartes’s privileging of the individual mind, arguing that much of our understanding of the world is necessarily shared.

Once we deconstruct Cartesian mediationalism, the problems that Hume, Kant, and many of our contemporaries still struggle with―trying to prove the existence of objects beyond our representations―fall away, as does the motivation for nonrealist doctrines. We can then begin to describe the background everyday world we are absorbed in and the universe of natural kinds discovered by science.

Knowledge and Realism without Representation
By Doctor Moss
Dreyfus and Taylor present a unique solution to the problems of knowledge and realism, “retrieving” both from a skepticism that seems inherent and inescapable in traditional western philosophy.

There are two big arguments in the book. The first is an epistemological argument and attacks what the authors call “mediational” theories of knowledge — ones in which our access to reality is in one way or another “mediated” rather than direct. The second is a metaphysical argument that takes a non-mediated, direct account of access to and knowledge of the world farther, to a “realist” claim about the status of our knowledge with respect to a world independent of our involvement in it or our making sense of it.

The anti-mediational argument is relatively familiar. Dreyfus and Taylor characterize “mediational” accounts of knowledge as adhering to four characteristics: (1) that our knowledge of reality outside us is obtained “only through” some features (ideas, representations, percepts) within us, (2) that our knowledge of external reality can be decomposed into some sort of discrete elements (e.g., ideas, beliefs, sentences), (3) that justifying those elements of knowledge cannot rely on anything outside of them — e.g., that beliefs only follow from other beliefs — that there is no transcendent Archimedean point from which to justify the system of beliefs or representations per se, and (4) a “dualist sorting” or, for short, the distinction between mind and reality (where “mind” needn’t be individual, but could refer to the theoretical knowledge or socially generated ideas of a community). The most familiar “mediational” accounts are representationalist, although Dreyfus and Taylor mean to generalize the view they oppose as “mediationalism” to encompass a broader scope of views.

They then draw on Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty to construct an alternative account in which our relationship to the world is pointedly unmediated. It is through our bodily orientation that we come to experience the world — our touching, gripping, and reaching, our orientation in up, down, near, far, our involvement in practical tasks . . . These are the ways in which we first or “primordially” come to terms with the world, not through observation at a distance and construction of representations or theories.

Their opponent here is a “picture,” in Wittgenstein’s sense of a picture that holds us captive. Once we escape this picture of the knower as observer and theorizer, the picture that has long dominated western philosophy, the involved, embedded knower can emerge.

So long as knowledge of the world is “mediated”, i.e., so long as we only know of the world through some intermediate (ideas, representations, etc.), the question of skepticism can arise. Do those intermediates provide us with reliable access? How could we know, since we have no independent way of checking their reliability in toto? This is the strength of Cartesian skepticism.

Eliminate the intermediary, and you disarm the skeptic. We know the world because we are already in it. There just is no separation, no mediation, to feed the skeptic’s doubt.

The response to skepticism then is not so much a solution as a dissolving, again in a Wittgensteinian sense. The skeptic cannot get his argument off the ground, because that separation, the question of how the “internal” (the idea, belief, representation, etc.) relates to the “external” (the world in itself) never arises in the first place.

Given that dissolution, the traditional philosopher may still ask, what of our theories, beliefs, ideas, representations? What is the status of the world they give us access to? Is it the world of traditional realists, or idealists, or something in-between? Kantian epistemology, for example, upheld knowledge but not realism, at least in the traditional metaphysical sense.

This is where the second argument of the book kicks in. Dreyfus and Taylor stake a “realist” claim. Roughly, their argument is that, beginning with our direct access to the world, our scientific undertaking, i.e., our investigation into what accounts for the behavior of the world we directly interact with, is a valid investigation into the world as it is in itself. In our direct interactions, we meet resistance from the world. The world has an independence against our will and understanding — objects in it are too hard, too soft, too distant, etc. And we seek an account of that resistance or independence. This is science, or at least protoscience.

The real crux of the argument comes in Chapter Seven, where Dreyfus and Taylor distinguish “deflationary realism” from “robust realism”. Deflationary realism is where we seem to end up when we admit that the world we live in is co-produced by us, providing sense and intelligibility, and “the world itself”. That “world itself” is never, according to this deflationary realism, available to us in its pristine, unalloyed state, only via our ways of making it intelligible. And in fact Dreyfus and Taylor seemed to be headed toward such a “deflationary realism” in their account of the world as we know it as a product of our interaction with it — a “co-production”.

If Dreyfus and Taylor stopped at deflationary realism, they would have still made a valuable contribution, in insisting that the ways in which we make the world intelligible are primarily bodily — via interaction-laden, orienting projects, movements and positions such as up, down, near, far, heavy to the hand, etc. This is in opposition to the, to my mind, Kantian notion of intelligibility that is intellectual and observer-driven.

But Dreyfus and Taylor want to claim “robust realism” — which in their terms reclaims a sense of truth as correspondence to an independently existing reality — the very terms of traditional realist epistemology that have been under attack.

They claim that in fact it is this “independence” of reality that scientific theories are capturing, in accounting for the resistance that we meet — the very fact that, while how we perceive and act may be up to us, but what we perceive and what we act with or against is not. Science gives us exactly an account of those very qualities of hardness, nearness, distance, etc. — the independence of reality that we meet in our direct access to it.

It’s important to see that these two big arguments — the epistemological and the metaphysical — are linked. Otherwise, a Cartesian response to “robust realism” would simply call classical doubts into play — dream or deceiver arguments. But those arguments themselves presume a lack of direct access. Skeptical arguments depend upon a problematic relationship between beliefs, theories, ideas, representations, etc. on one side (the “internal” for Drefyus and Taylor) and reality itself on the other (the “external”). But, if Dreyfus and Taylor have been successful in their first big argument, that problematic relationship never is able to get off the ground.

I have to admit reticence to accept their conclusions. As Dreyfus and Taylor conceive science, it is the result of a Heideggerian “deworlding” — an abstraction from the context of everyday life in which direct access is grounded. I haven’t yet seen the argument that this abstraction isn’t also a distortion of that direct access — a withdrawing into abstraction and an explicit construction of “theory”. Explicit beliefs, statements, even representations are the lifeblood of science — in the abstraction and withdrawal that generate them, is there room again for the skeptic’s distinction between world and account to grow? More to think about.

How can this be?
By William S Jamison
This is a surprising turn of events. The author of Sources of the Self and A Secular Age seems to be moving more towards a Husserlian point of view - Back to the Things Themselves! How can this be? At first I was worried Dreyfus kidnaped Taylor and took him off to the Laurentian Mountains. But the book is serious. It reminds me of Philip Kitcher's book from the 80s on mathematical knowledge. That book presented a theory of mathematics that argued our abilities in math come from perception leading to elementary mathematical knowledge on which is built the edifice of further theory. As I read this book it reminded me of this argument. Another is Seeing Things as They Are by John Searle (which I have just barely begun) that both strike me as trying to do something similar. That is they are trying to do an end run around what Taylor refers to as the mediational theory that basically cuts knowledge off from reality – or rather, from the possibility that we could have certainty regarding the world apart from our perceptions. Of course, even that summary is mistaken since the issue is more complex than that. Or what might be called disjunctivism (but which Searle calls Conceptual Dualism) as I understand it in Searle’s argument and Searle says “Austin refuted the argument from illusion.” – which argument is a major step here. But regarding Philip Kitcher’s attempt in the Nature of Mathematical Knowledge we have what may be the most certain type of knowledge being puzzled out regarding the source of that sense of certainty. Recalling Wittgenstein’s statement that the type of certainty one has is a result of the type of language game one is using – we can think of mathematics as the most rigorous language game and so our sense of certainty (a different category than knowledge granted) is greatest in mathematics. But how do we get it? Do we perceive numbers? But this whole project strikes me as suspicious. Haven’t we been convinced that Western Philosophy has been a history of progress? The progress was partially because of the correct step that we are now contemplating reversing in order to retrieve realism? But here we can see the effort by Taylor and Dreyfus who deal adequately I think with the puzzles even if the results are not conclusive.

disapointing
By Amazon Customer
to be honest i was disapointed with the book, i expected more. im a big fan of hubert dreyfus, and this was a let down. i am a layman and not really intrested in how to write philosophy and overcome the mistakes daescartes and others have made when writing philosophy. for a general person looking to be enlightened or find some meaning this is not the book for you, it is an accademic book for philosphy students or similiar specialised areas to study. i would get a refund on this item if i could

Deeply Moving M/M BDSM!
By Niki
This deeply moving BDSM from Mike is one absorbing, arousing and stirring read. It is not consumed by sex as in most gay erotica but it is a story with a heart.
Dave is a badly abused victim in a previous BDSM partnership. His suffering at the hands of an abusive and obsessive partner simply tugs at my heart.
Dave needs and certainly deserves to be loved and nurtured and Richard is just the very Dom to do that. The fact that Dave and Richard were former lovers before they broke up and ventured into the BDSM world gives more substance to their later Dom/Sub relationship.
Add to that a tightly paced and gripping plot, Music and Metal is captivating and certaintly this writer's best effot to-date and the title is most fitting.

Music and Metal
By mnix
Richard is at his usual hangout, having a drink, when someone from his past walks in. Years ago Richard didn't know what to do when Dave wanted to be tied up, but Richard's more confident now. He still finds Dave very attractive, and invites him home.

Dave is very happy to see Richard, who he never forgot. When Richard wants to try again, so does he. Unfortunately, Dave has a terrible secret in his past that doesn't want to stay in the past. Will Dave and Richard be able to make it work this time?

Music and Metal was an enjoyable, multi-faceted story. There was romance, BDSM, and suspense. There was also a big shot of melodrama, but even that was enjoyable as it was enough to be interesting without being ridiculous or over-the-top. Normally, BDSM isn't really my thing, but in this book the BDSM was very well-written and came across as loving rather than controlling. Richard was an ideal top in my mind. He liked to be in control, but used his control to increase Dave's pleasure rather than his own. Dave was a flighty musician who was insecure about himself due to horrific events in his past. I liked the way he grew stronger and more self-assured under Richard's care. It was especially admirable given his truly chilling past. The suspense angle of the book was well-done and didn't fizzle out--in fact it ended in a rather explosive climax(which is where the melodrama came in). With hot, tender love scenes, two great heroes, and suspense, Mike Shade has written quite a page-turner!

Very similar to Sean Michael's BDSM books
By Charly T. Anchor
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- Similarities between this and Sean Michael's writing are obvious by the second page: the choppy writing style, the uber confident and possessive Dom, the frenetic sub. Since I love Michael's Hammer books, I had a feeling right off the bat that I would at least like this one, if not love it. (see cons below also)
- The characters are open with other about their pleasure, and there are some incredibly sweet moments. During their first scene, Dave admits to Richard that he's not sure he has a soul anymore, and Richard responds, "Sh. We'll find it, Dave."
- I love Richard. His favorite thing to do for his subs is pamper them in whatever way they want him to, whether that means with pain, with simple touching, with kissing, whatever. He's completely focused on Dave right from the start. He's not perfect, but whenever he makes a mistake, he's quick to admit it and then fix it.
- There's an aspect in the relationship that's new to me (that is, I haven't encountered it in any other BDSM books I've read): Dave, the sub, hums and sings while they're in a scene. He's a professional musician, so that makes sense, but I loved how the music connects the two characters. Dave can't keep from singing, and Richard loves hearing him.

CONS:
- The book is maybe a little TOO similar to Michael's BDSM stories in some ways. The plot in this story is very similar to that of Between Friends: Sammy's Place; the characters have not just the same BASIC characteristics as Michael's characters, but many of the same specific character traits, as well; and even some of the character names are the same (granted, Ollie and Killian are the villains here, and they're good guys in the Hammer books). I just got the feeling I'd read most of it before.
- I grew tired of how often Richard uses the word "baby" when he's talking to Dave.

Overall comments: If you've read many of Sean Michael's BDSM stories, this one is likely to seem like an imitation. I liked the book quite a bit, but the writing style is something that I would call an acquired taste. It's probably 70% sex, most of it kinky (nothing TOO severe, just bondage and light pain games).

Rebel Gold: One Man's Quest to Find the Hidden Treasure of the, by Warren Getler, Bob Brewer

As a boy growing up in rural Arkansas, Bob Brewer often heard from his uncle and his great-uncle about a particular tree in the woods, the "Bible Tree," filled with strange carvings. Years later he would learn that this tree was carved with symbols associated with the Knights of the Golden Circle, a Civil Warera secret society that had buried gold coins and other treasure in various remote locations across the South and Southwest in hopes of someday funding a second War Between the States. These secret caches were guarded by sentinels, men whose responsibility it was to watch and protect these sites. To his astonishment, Bob discovered that both his uncle and his great-uncle had been twentieth-century sentinels, and that he had grown up near an important KGC treasure site.

In Shadow of the Sentinel, Bob Brewer and investigative journalist Warren Getler tell the fascinating story of the Knights of the Golden Circle and the hidden caches the KGC established across the country. Brewer reveals how, with agonizing effort, he eventually deciphered the fiendishly complicated KGC codes and ciphers, which drew heavily on images associated with Freemasonry. (Many of the key KGC postCivil War leaders were Scottish Rite Masons, who used the cover of that secret fraternity to conduct their activities.) Using his knowledge of KGC symbolism to crack coded maps, Brewer has located several KGC caches and has recovered gold coins, guns, and other treasure from some of them.

Shadow of the Sentinel is the most comprehensive account yet of the activities of the KGC after the Civil War and, indeed, into the 1900s. Getler and Brewer suggest that the clandestine network of KGC operatives was far wider than previously thought, and that it included Jesse James, the former Confederate guerrilla whose stage and bank robberies helped to fill KGC treasure chests.

This is a rousing and provocative adventure that weaves together one man's personal quest with an intriguing, little-known chapter in America's hidden history.

From Publishers Weekly
Conspiracy connoisseurs tired of contemplating whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone will feast on this tale of the 19th-century doings of the Knights of the Golden Circle. According to treasure hunter Brewer (aided by Bloomberg News editor-at-large Getler), who attempts to unravel their secrets in hopes of finding millions of dollars of hidden gold, the KGC was a sinister group of influential Southerners intent on engineering the secession of Southern states. They supposedly conspired to split the 1860 Democratic convention so that a weak candidate would emerge, guaranteeing Lincoln's election and support for secession-a deep game indeed. Losing the Civil War sent them underground, where, the authors say, political theorist and KGC member Jesse James, whose death they faked, led them to amass a fortune primarily through the pedestrian crimes of bank and stagecoach robbery and, more creatively, by collecting a multimillion-dollar award from Mexican Emperor Maximilian as repayment for aiding Maximilian's tottering regime. They hid their treasure, preserving knowledge of its whereabouts through a series of devilishly complex symbols known only to initiates for the day the South would rise again. Brewer believes some of his relatives were "sentinels" charged with protecting the KGC's hidden treasure. As fanciful as the group's history sounds (and the authors admit it is heavily based on circumstantial evidence), Brewer is convincing that the code existed and that he deciphered some of it, and his treasure hunting meets with modest success. In the end, this is a curiosity that will strain many readers' credibility, but leave a lingering "Maybe." Photos, maps.

From Booklist
Buried treasure! Secret societies! The South shall rise again! Yes, all the red-blooded elements of a boy's adventure story crowd this tale, except that, tall as it is, it purports to be true. While growing up in the 1950s, Brewer learned at his grandpa's knee that rebels cached gold in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas to finance round two of the Civil War. After a career in the navy, Brewer dedicated himself to pursuing the story, written up here by reporter Getler. This exceedingly recondite story involves Scottish Rite Freemasonry, codes, cabalistic carvings on trees, Jesse James, a furtive entity called Knights of the Golden Circle, and a helluva lot of speculation. Still, Brewer is convinced the Confederacy's hidden treasury is still out there waiting to be dug up; alas, he unwisely confided one location to a rogue who allegedly absconded with the multimillion-dollar rebel stash. But Brewer perseveres, secret maps in hand, searching in, aptly enough, Arizona's Superstition Mountains. A saga that inveigles more than it convinces. Gilbert Taylor

Review
Dan Burstein, editor of the national bestseller Secrets of the Code: The Unauthorized Guide to the Mysteries Behind The Da Vinci Code Rebel Gold is a great adventure story and a fascinating treasure-hunt tale, but it is much more than that. It is an improbable, fantastic, and yet ultimately eye-opening trek through unknown, unseen, and unremembered episodes of American history. Jesse James, Confederate gold, the Knights of the Golden Circle, Freemasons, Albert Pike, the Ku Klux Klan, mysterious maps, codes, and symbols, echoes of the Knights Templar: It would make a great case for Dan Brown's Robert Langdon character -- except Warren Getler and Bob Brewer got there first -- and in non-fiction!

Conspiracies abound
By Jesse S. Walker
Is it true? Who knows. The real question is whether the book can keep my interest. At first it did a great job in laying out the story as the authors saw it. Unfortunately most of the last half of the book is spent trying to describe how he "located" the "treasure" spots. It also included maps which to my inexperienced eyes seem more of a stretch. I agree if there was a succession of Confederate treasure spots it would make sense that they all were laid out in similar patterns with markers. The question is whether you believe his explanation of markings. I have to admit it seems a bit of a stretch but who knows stranger things have happened I guess. The real problem is the book simply falls apart half way through whether true or not you no longer care.

An interesting read.
By Tony Hughes
Is there really millions of dollars of Confederate treasure buried in strategically hidden spots across the Continental United States? Yes according to Bob Brewer, co-author of this book.

Shadow of the Sentinel follows Bob's quest to discover and uncover various hoardes of suposed Confederate treasure using his analytical skills, a few clues and a whole bunch of hearsay and supposition. Amazingly he seems to have 'cracked' the code and been on to something. However, we never really find out of he is as he's either stabbed in the back by his erstwhile partner(s) or is refusing to dig as he doesn't have the proper authorisation.
Bob Brewer is a smart fellow; he also seems to be a naive fellow, too. If you're confident that you've discovered buried treasure, be sure you really know somebody before you tell them.
The book gives a detailed history of the Knights of the Golden Circle whilst Bob's treasure hunt is interspersed with tales of the Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, The Civil War and beyond.
A book certainly worth reading even if the conclusion is inconclusive.

'The editors have put together an impressive reference work, serious in intent and rigorous in implementation. As a publishing achievement, and a scholarly 'event' in the field, SAGE is to be congratulated. It is designed as a work of synthesis, to link past and present, general and specific' - Journal of General Management

Praise for the New Edition:

'An excellent collection of papers giving a timely overview of the field' - Gareth Morgan

'In this substantially updated, revised and extended edition of the widely acclaimed Handbook, the high standard of the contributions is maintained. Metaphors of conversation and discourse are engagingly invoked to make and explore new distinctions, directions and connections. It is a key reference volume for more advanced students of this rapidly developing field' - Hugh Willmott , Diageo Professor of Management Studies, Judge Business School, University of Cambridge

'Giving the authors of the Handbook of Organization Studies the opportunity to revise and update their earlier contributions makes this handbook unique. Comparing the revised chapters to their originals offers the reader unparalleled insight into how knowledge develops in our discipline. New frameworks and deeper understandings, grounded in continuing scholarship, abound in this updated classic' - Mary Jo Hatch, C.
