This is a great book...

This is a great book if you have the right teacher. The book is very informative yet if you have no back ground in abnormal psych you might want to make sure the teacher for your course is capable of explaining it to you. I also recomend that you make sure your copy has a CD rom. The study guide and website are great tools too. They help a lot.

I am taking abnormal psychology course at the University of Brithsh Columbia, Canada. I really enjoyed reading this book because it is very informative and thought provoking and really made me abnormalities of the human being. I really liked the case examples. It takes a bit of time to read chapters but it worth the time.

When it's discovered, by one wounded outcast, that gay shifters also have destined mates, the shifter world is forced to rethink its beliefs. A change in the shifter hierarchy is shaking up the packs, making new rules and forcing the shifters' archaic ways out the door. For some, the changes may come too late; their faith in their fellow shifters has been shattered.

For others, the changes are embraced with open minds and hearts—and a hope that burns deep inside. To be accepted, part of the pack, instead of living with the threat of being shunned for their sexual preferences—many shifters are free for the first time. 5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!!

It’s no secret that I love the Southwestern Shifters series and loved that I got to gorge myself on the series in August. So you won’t be shocked to learn that I was beyond thrilled when I found out about Retrograde’s release and I nearly went through the roof when I discovered that Bradford had written it as another chapter in Marcus and Nathan’s life. I love all of the couples in the series and each has a special place in my heart, but with all the Nathan has dealt with as Marcus was under attack from more than one quarter, it felt right for them to get another installment in the series and Bradford managed to make me love this couple even more than I already did.

Because of assassination attempts and challenges for Marcus’s position, Nathan has been on edge for a while and having to kill another individual (even one who was bad) in order to save Marcus’s life makes that edge even finer. It’s not that Nathan regrets saving Marcus’s life or even that he killed to do so, but rather that he was forced to take another’s life. Having been raised by a human, Nathan still finds the easy acceptance of violence among shifters too much to bear at times. Sensing that his mate needs to get away and realizing that they need a chance to reinforce their bond before an upcoming conference of the Alpha Anaxes, Marcus makes arrangements for a short getaway for just the two of them. Having the chance to let their wolves run free in a safe environment that’s not fenced in, to spend time alone with just the two of them, and to connect sexually on a more primal level does wonders for both men. Yet even on vacation they can’t seem to get away from the needs of other wolves when they discover a wild pack of young shifters who know nothing about the shifter society. Thank goodness Marcus and Nathan know of a wolf who loves to take in strays – Gabe. But when demands of Marcus’s position require that they return to the compound, they are once again faced with treachery when another plot to take out an AA is discovered. For once, Marcus wasn’t the target but because it was being attempted in his home it affected him no less. Thankfully Marcus has a pack filled with loyal and intelligent shifters who were able to help thwart yet another assassination attempt and strengthen ties with other honorable AAs.

Retrograde was another excellent addition to the Southwestern Shifters series. I loved watching Nathan and Marcus get back to nature so to speak and embrace their wolf so fully. It was obvious it did them good mentally, but it also made for some smoking hot sex scenes. They were lucky they didn’t start a forest fire with as hot as they got. I liked that Bradford made another AA the target in this novel and that for once Marcus didn’t have the bullseye on his back. I found his handling of the territory situation to be very telling of the kind of man Marcus is – a good man who only wants what’s best for all shifters. I loved meeting Lexxie and hope to see more of her in the future and learning more about her heritage. That Bradford foreshadowed the changes that are coming for Marcus and his pack made me so freaking happy because that means more books are in the future. But the end. Oh my word was the end sweet. I mean… We’ve got puppies!

Things are changing and they’re coming fast, what Marcus and Nathan needs is some time alone to decide what to do but their private vacation is interrupted when they discover a pack of young shifters barely surviving in this gripping paranormal romance. There was no way that I could stop reading this story once I began because the story is chock full of emotional turmoil, excitement and passion all involving one of my favorite couples, Marcus and Nathan, and I have to tell you I can’t wait to find out what happens next with all those changes and of course that important event will be the most exciting for them in the years to come.

I totally enjoyed this series I love the whole true mate love in a day thing and I just love all the adventures they had I'm so sad to see this series end. I really wanted more books about where they move to sigh I hope ms Bradford continues it.

Great integration of Modern Ecological Anthropology

I would say quite hastily that this book is probably the best introduction to Ecological Anthropology, written by a massive authority on the subject. What I love about the book is its ability to present the pertinent aspects of the subject matter in a way that forces you to understand why it is important. My only caveat about the book is that it does assume a certain degree of knowledge about environmental science that I found most students of anthropology (including myself when I read it) do not have. Keeping this in mind, if you do have supplementary texts available on the natural science aspects of this subject, than you will definately be able to appreciate the depths of human adaptability that Moran describes. This cannot necessarily be considered a weakness of the book, since the natural science has been discussed elsewhere. On the other hand, the material in this book is a great compilation of cultural, physiological, and genetic adaptations around the world. Since it is this that Moran stresses, it is of no detriment to the book that the natural science is not as detailed as it must be.

Below is a list of supplementary texts that should be read alongside this book, the most important one being the soil science textbook.

1) The Nature and Properties of Soils - by Nyle Brady & Ray Weil

2) Ecology: Theories and Applications - by Peter Stiling

3) A book on Human Biology and Human Physiology (I have not found one to my liking which is why I don't recommend a specific one here).

Informative & Interesting

Had to buy this book and read it for my Ecological Anthropology class. Its not as bad as some of the others I've had to read. At least this one is less "We are killing mother nature, we must go paganistic to protect her". After four books of that sort of talk, this one was a blessing. It had its moments of beating that dead horse but it provided much more of what I was hoping to find: information on Human and Environmental interactions.
The value of this book is in the chapters describing the different climates in which people have adapted. Each climate showcases one particular tribe with glances at those in similar conditions. It looks at subsistence, physical and behavioral adaptations to enable survival which includes housing, clothing, activities, food choices, and population management. It also discusses at the end of each section how each area is threatened, how the cultures are being damaged by globalization and separation from tradition, and how that particular groups traditional knowledge could be used to help other cultures with loss of species diversity.

To me it was an okay addition to my personal library. If I didn't have to read it for class within a set amount of time I might have enjoyed it better. Still a valuable source of knowledge.

Technical but interesting book for class

While I have only gone through about half the book, so far it does a fair job of summarizing studies of anthropology. The book is on the technical side however, and can be a bit of chore to digest. Overall I find it an interesting read in human interaction with the environment.

About the Author
Lee E. Brown is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is on the NSCA board of directors. He is also a certified health fitness instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a certified club coach by USA Weightlifting Federation (USAWF). Brown holds a master’s degree in exercise science from Florida Atlantic University, and he expects to receive a doctorate in educational leadership from the same institution in the summer of 2000. Formerly a high school physical education teacher and coach of many sports, Brown now teaches advanced strength and conditioning courses and serves as a health sciences lab coordinator at Florida Atlantic University. He lives in Coconut Creek, Florida.

Vance Ferrigno is the director of fitness and aquatics at Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida. In addition, he has been a strength and conditioning consultant to professional and amateur athletes since 1990. He is certified through ACSM as a health fitness instructor (HFI) as well as a health fitness director. He is also a CSCS through the NSCA and a USAWF Club Coach. Ferrigno, who earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Florida State University, assists in developing and teaching the curriculum for a strength and conditioning course at Florida Atlantic University. He resides in Coconut Creek, Florida.

Juan Carlos Santana holds a master’s degree in exercise science from Florida Atlantic University and is working on his PhD in exercise physiology at the University of Miami. He is certified by the NSCA (CSCS) and the ACSM (HFI). Santana also holds coaching certifications with USA Weightlifting and USA Track and Field. He is a member of the NSCA Conference Committee and chairs the NSCA Sports Specific Conference. Santana has been a national competitor and coach in five different sports throughout his 20-year athletic and coaching career. He now lectures internationally and directs Optimum Performance Systems, a Florida company that consults for various equipment companies, athletic teams, and private clients. Santana lives in Boca Raton, Florida.

Nice Reference Book

This book provides the most comprehensive list of drills for speed and agility that I've seen yet. The included DVD which contains examples on how to perform some of the drills is nice also. The book & DVD are a great value. Here are my pros:

1.comprehensive number of drills
2.nice photos
3.DVD
4.example training programs provided for many sports

Here are my cons:

1.Lacks certain details for the beginner or non coach. Before beginning a program for improving speed, agility & quickness, the book strongly recommends an assessment of your current levels of strength, movement and fitness needs. The book provides what exercises should be performed to assess your current levels, but I wish norms or metrics would have been provided for the assessment exercises. If I must perform single-leg body weight squats to assess my functional strength, how many must I perform to determine whether my strength is adequate or deficient? This is not provided. Page 16 provides all of the assessment exercises, but they all lack the metrics or norms for acheivement.

2.As comprehensive the list of drills are, I found that some of the descriptions on how to perform the drills were lacking. Only a single photo is provided along with a relatively short description on how to perform the drill. There are many drills that just can't be adequately described through written instructions. This is insufficient when proper technique and form is essential to performing the drills. I found myself going to Youtube for videos on some of these drills.

3.With number 2 being said, the DVD should have had videos of all of the drills contained in this book. It only has 66 of the 195 drills.

Besides those deficiencies, I still think this is an excellent resource and provides all the drills I would ever need for tennis training. I give 4/5 stars for the 3 cons mentioned above.

This book is a beautiful window into the Burning Man culture. It is full of mind blowing photography of some of the world's biggest and best art. I keep the book on my coffee table and guests love flipping through it. Think is would also make a great gift for any creative person or Burning Man enthusiast.

This is a fantastic great bit of photographic magic. Karen Kuehn has an eye for the excellent and shows off the artists of Burning Man to advantage. The book is great fun, delightful to sit with while you leaf through pages and pages of spectacular accomplishment. Get it.

Most pivotal battle ever?

Howarth's comparisons of Norman, English, and Norse versions of Hastings was quite refreshing. In the end, like all good authors, he has a learned opinion, but not before he sets out a platter of choices for one to arrive at. This book is the perfect representation of quality over quantity, as he easily portrays all angles in a compact volume. This rendition of the battle and events leading up to it, are superior to many others twice to three times the size. If you only read one on the subject--this is your obvious choice.

A very readable, down to earth overview. While many of the facts have been lost to history, it's made fairly clear when there are doubts or alternate explanations. Not a long book, and no prior knowledge of the period or people involved is required. Would recommend to anybody looking for a solid summary.

Very readable insightful popular history

There were several strong features of David Howarth's book 1066.

First, there was excellent characterization. King Harold and Duke William were fully protrayed in all their strengths and weaknesses. They are both drawn as humans with a mixture of assets and contradictions. William was a military prodigy since age 19 whereas Harold was a strong self-made man trying to cobble England back together after the rule of Edward the Confessor. The story is full of heroes and villians. King Edward the Confessor was a problematic ruler who set the stage for the conflict, supposedly promising the crownof England to William, which was against English law. Harold's cruel sadistic traitor brother, Tostig, caused much ruin and destruction of the English nation. There are many other characters, including the wild Norseman Harold Hardrada who invaded England independently but simultaneously with Duke William the Conqueror. Harold could probably have defeated one invasion but not two. Your heart sinks when Harold learns during the victory feast over his defeat of Harold Hardrada' army, that William has invaded and is marching inland.

Second, there is excellent explanations about the technology of farming, law and courts, social structures, and warfare at the time. Howarth contrast the Norman knights, their code of chivalry, their use of horses in warfare, with the English footsoldier with his Norse two handed axe. Howarth is no fan of chivalry which he argues is a destructive social structure that diverts the male children of the aristocracy into warlike activiees starting at age 8 and that creates professional warriors who disdain work and their fellow citizens while they seek and glorify violence and warfare. I found it very interesting that archers were not used in the Battle of Hastings because archery was a priviledge sport used to kill deer that belonged bo the aristocracy. The common soldier would not have access to this art reserved for the nobility. The use of ships to transport soldiers nad horses was also well told.

Third, the context and times were well explained, including the corrrupt papacy which had never been elected by the Cardinals until right prior to the battle. Most interesting was the rule of law practiced in England priro to the invasion which was destoryed by the invasion and the dictatorship of the Normans over the Anglo-Saxons. This resulted in 300,000 Anglo-Saxon deaths from starvation while 200,000 Frenchmen relocated to England, changing the language and customes forever.

Fourth,the final battle was well described in terms of strategy, human limitations, and bloody gore. Full of facts, well told, and briefly presented, this little book gets 5 stars.

I actually bought this for my granddaughter but I took several minutes to leaf through the book and I thoght it was very well done and quite useful for the student of French. I would recommend for any fan of Charles Dickens as well.
