Disappointing. Lazy. Incomplete.

I was really looking forward to getting this book. Navigating the admission requirements for veterinary schools has been difficult. Unlike other professional programs, each veterinary school has different requirements. For some schools this just means additional courses must be taken. For others it may mean that specific courses must have specific prerequisites in order to satisfy the school's requirements or must be taken at a 4 year university as opposed to a community college. Sadly, this guide does not always notify the user of these vital subtleties.

For example, the guide only notes 3 things for the University of Illinois under "Prerequisites for Admission." These include 8 hours of biological science, 16 hours of chemical science, and 8 hours of physics. Head to U of I's website and you see that biochemistry is a required course and the only qualifying course is one that has organic chemistry as a prerequisite. A slew of profiles for other schools also fail to note this. Not all undergraduate universities (including mine) offer biochemistry with an organic prerequisite. Someone relying on this guide could be forced to retake biochemistry in order to fulfill this requirement because they simply did not know about it.

The book is also completely inconsistent with its break down of required courses. For example, the guide lists out each course requirement completely for some schools, noting that some must be taken at 4 year universities etc. while others simply direct you to the school's website! Really? What was the purpose of purchasing a book on veterinary school requirements if you are just going to direct me to the school's website?!

Again, some schools list some information on previous entering classes including average GPA, science GPA, and GRE scores while others list nothing. It is quite frustrating and unhelpful.

Sadly, this book has proven to be a huge disappointment. Until the authors step up their game or a competing publication comes around I strongly suggest sticking to the old way of doing things.

I'm finishing up my bachelors degree and had no idea about any schools for a DVM. Getting this book has been a lifesaver. It has every school in the country plus some and tells you exactly what is required for applying to those schools. It's a great book for people seriously looking into veterinary school. Glad I found it.

SUGATA BISWAS has been a management consultant with some of the leading consulting firms in private, public, and nonprofit sectors including Accenture, IBM Global Services/The Wilkerson Group, RAND Corporation, and Viant. Mr. Biswas graduated from the University of Chicago with honors in economics and holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management.
DARYL TWITCHELL was a management consultant with the international strategy consulting firm Mercer Management Consulting/CDI, and was a director in the Strategic Planning Group of American Express. He held senior management positions at American Express in strategic investments and new business development, and worked in venture capital as a director at FrontLine Capital Group. Mr. Twitchell graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude from Brown University with a degree in international relations and history, and holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management.

Excellent Preparation for Consulting Interviews

I've read them all - Wet Feet, Vault, HBS, Naficy - and this book is the one that helped me the most. Naficy is anecdotal and dated at this point; HBS is written for Harvard students and contains recruiter info that pertains only to them; Wet Feet is just superficial; and although Vault has some useful content, Management Consulting has all of the same info plus much much more. Don't bother with the others - just get this book.

This book is fabulous! Twitchell and Biswas have produced a book that will accelerate your consulting job search.
In a single volume, they have provided everything you will need to land a job in consulting. Just glance at the Table of Contents and you will quickly realize how comprehensive the book is: 1) The Management Consulting Industry; 2) The Consultant's Work and Lifestyle; 3) Insider Perspectives on Consulting; 4) Planning Your Consulting Career; 5) Mastering the Case Interview; 6) Negotiating Your Offer; and finally 15 Essential Frameworks, 100 Case Questions and 10 Sample Answers, and a Directory of 50 Firms. Unlike Wet Feet Press and The Vault Reports, which require you to buy multiple books to get a complete picture, this book provides everything you need to learn about the consulting industry and master the case interview in ONE VOLUME.
And if you're looking for a personal, insider's perspective, you can't beat this book. That is all I can say to the authors of this book!
Five months ago, I wanted to make a career switch. Since I like troubleshooting and problem solving, and, to be frank, I needed a higher salary if I was to continue living in San Francisco, I thought consulting might be a good avenue to pursue.
My first interview was with Deloitte and Touche, and ... I BOMBED IT. Although I had talked to several of my friends who were in or had been in consulting, and even a business professor at UC Berkeley (where I went to college), I was ill-prepared for the CASE INTERVIEW.
I agree with another reviewer (Carlsbad, CA) that case interviews may not be the best tool for recruiting consulants. Afterall, how many consultants (outside veterinary consultants) really need to know how many kittens there are in the USA? HOWEVER, until the PREMIERE consulting firms stop using them to gage how one thinks under pressure about an unfamiliar problem, then you cannot beat Biswas and Twitchell's "Management Consulting: A Complete Guide to the Indusrty" and Wet Feet Press' "So You Want to be a Management Consultant" for preparation.
{I guess where I disagree with Carlsbad, CA's review is that this book (or any book) written as a guide to a recruiting process and the industry as a whole, should not and cannot be faulted for the problems in the recruitment process or in the industry. I am thankful that this book covered the case interview so well -- since that is exactly what I faced when I was looking for consulting jobs. Moreover, unlike the reviewer from Carlsbad, CA who is a business professor and a part-time consultant, I now do consulting full-time. While there are times I don't enjoy working long hours, I cannot fault this book for telling me about the often grueling lifestyle -- although I can certainly fault the industry for it.}
Now, if you have the money, I suggest that you buy both this book, and the Wet Feet Press book. But if you don't have money to burn, I would definitely buy Biswas' and Twitchell's Guide first for two reasons: 1) it offers realistic qualifications about the grueling consulting lifestlye, and 2) it has great essays by reknowned consultants.
These two parts will help you to answer questions from recruiters about your personal lifestyle requirements (are you willing to travel, are you willing to be away from home, are you willing to work 60-80 hours a week consistently), and it always helps to know the names and histories of renkowned consultants (like John Wilkerson, who has an essay in this book) when discussing your future as a consultant.
More importantly, you have to decide whether Management Consulting is the right career for you (The sections about lifestyle (work requirements) and by renowned consultants will help you answer that question).
When I was done interviewing, I had four offers to consider from some great firms! While I can't say that all of it was due to reading this book or Wet Feet Press' book, a large part of my success came from being better prepared for case interviews, and knowing what to expect from a consulting career.

About the Author

Serope Kalpakjian is a professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He is the author of Mechanical Processing of Materials (Van Nostrand, 1967) and co-author of Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations (with E.S. Nachtman, Dekker, 1985). Both of the first editions of his books Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials (Addison-Wesley, 1984) and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (Addison-Wesley, 1989) have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award of SME. He has conducted research in several areas in manufacturing processes; is the author of numerous technical papers and articles in professional journals, handbooks, and encyclopedias; and has edited several conference proceedings. He also has been editor and co-editor of various technical journals and has served on the editorial board of Encyclopedia Americana.

Professor Kalpakjian has received the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology (1970), the ASME Centennial Medallion (1980), the SME International Education Award (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Outstanding Teacher Award from ASM International (2000); the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award for 2002 was named after him. Professor Kalpakjian is a life fellow of ASME, fellow of SME, fellow and life member of ASM International, fellow emeritus of The International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), and a past president and founding member of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution/SME. He is a high honors graduate of Robert College (Istanbul), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Steven R. Schmid is an associate professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and conducts research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with Honors) and master’s and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T. Parsons Award from SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from ASME (2000), the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000 and 2003), and the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005). He is also the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994).

Professor Schmid is the author of over 100 technical papers, has co-authored Fundamentals of Machine Elements (McGraw-Hill), Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication (Dekker), Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials (Prentice Hall), and has contributed two chapters to the CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology. He is a registered professional engineer, a certified manufacturing engineer of SME, a member of the North American Research Institution, and a fellow of the ASME. In 2012, he was named an ASME Foundation Swanson Fellow and served as Assistant Director for Research Partnerships at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, National Institute for Science and Technology.

Classic Manufacturing Technology Working Book [1989 ed]

This is one of 2 books that captures the essence of a manufacturing management (or industrial engineering) engineering undergraduate degree- the other being an operations management text from Ray Wild, Nigel Slack, or Laurie Mullins. To help get an idea of what being a manufacturing engineer involves, prospective students should envision a dose of intense team & individual industry-based change projects, and striving globally competitive companies to add "seasoning" to these books. The broad `technology' contents are useful for industry veterans, consultants, and undergraduate students alike, as well as being a good starting point for researchers.
Over 1000 pages of richly detailed and illustrated yet concise contents span:
* materials properties- metals, behaviour & testing, properties, alloys, production of steels, non-ferrous production, plastics, ceramics, and composites.

Very good manufacturing text

I've taught a quarter-long Manufacturing Processes course out of this text (and its predecessor) for four years, and plan to continue using it. This text presents a great overview of a wide variety of processes, which is exactly what I'm trying to achieve. It also goes into reasonable depth with many processes. I do not attempt to cover the entire text in one quarter, however -- I use roughly half.

When asked on end-of-term evaluations whether they agreed with the statement, "The textbook was valuable in my learning experience," students consistently rated this text 4.1/5.0. The average score campus-wide for textbooks is 3.6/5.0. Anecdotally, the handful of students who actually bother reading the text come up to me and say, "It really is interesting and easy to read."

Yes, there are some errors which have been frustratingly carried over from the 5th edition, but you catch many of them with a first reading. These errors knock it down from 5- to 4-stars, but I'm still really happy with the text.

A poor choice in a textbook

This book is not worth the money it costs. It hasn't been proofread from its last edition very well, still referring to old diagrams that aren't renumbered in their proper order. Also, most of the questions it asks for homework actually require that students get the answers online because they don't even address them in the book. Also, there are typos on several equations they report in the book. This can give the students confusion on which equation is actually correct and provides inconsistences in the math the authors exhibit in their examples. Upon looking at some solutions in the solutions manual, it expects students to somehow know they are not incorporating friction when the book doesn't even specify to do so. Overall, it does not seem that this book was well thought out. It seems that it was just put out quick in order to have a new edition from which to make money. I would not recommend this as a textbook for any class.

The various chapters contain illustrations which throw light on what uses can be made from MCS to discover the finite sample properties of a broad range of alternative econometric methods with a focus on the rather basic models and techniques.

About the Author
Irene Goldenberg is Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. She served as Associate Chairperson of that department and as Director of Psychological Services for many years, and continues to teach marriage and family therapy courses to psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers there. She currently supervises doctoral students and directs the family therapy program at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Together with Herbert Goldenberg, Dr. Goldenberg was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. She also holds membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. She has been elected fellow in that APA division. She is co-author of another book published by Brooks/Cole, COUNSELING TODAY'S FAMILIES, Fourth Edition.

Mark Stanton is the Provost and Professor of Graduate Psychology at Azusa Pacific University (APU). He served APU previously as founding dean of Behavioral and Applied Sciences, chair of the Department of Graduate Psychology, and founding director of the APA-accredited Doctor of Psychology program. He was the 2011-2012 president of the American Board of Couple and Family Psychology, a constituent board of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and the 2005 president of the Society for Family Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He is a licensed psychologist in the state of California, board certified in couple and family psychology with the American Board of Professional Psychology. The Society for Family Psychology recognized him as the Family Psychologist of the Year in 2007. Stanton is the author of over 50 articles, books, and book chapters on aspects of couple and family therapy. He was the inaugural editor (2011-2014) of Couple and Family Psychology: Research and Practice, a peer-reviewed journal published by APA, and previously served as editor of The Family Psychologist (2002-2007). He is co-author of SPECIALTY COMPETENCIES IN COUPLE AND FAMILY PSYCHOLOGY (with Robert Welsh) and the co-editor of the HANDBOOK OF FAMILY PSYCHOLOGY (with James Bray, 2009).

Herbert Goldenberg was Professor Emeritus of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles, where he developed and taught classes in family therapy. Together with Irene Goldenberg he was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. About the Author
Allan Robbins, B.Sc., M.Sc., was an instructor at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he taught numerous courses in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology Department prior to his retirement. He has served both as section chair and treasurer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and as treasurer of the Electronics Industry Association of Manitoba. Robbins is also a former director of training, industrial applications, for Microelectronics Center. He holds bachelor and master of science degrees in electrical engineering.

Wilhelm Miller, Dipl T, B.Sc., taught numerous courses in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology Department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he also served as chair of the department. Miller has served as president of the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM) and is currently chair of the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB). He holds a diploma of technology in electronics and a bachelor of science degree in physics/mathematics.

One of the best books on circuits analysis

This is really on of the best college books on electronic and electrical theory books I have read and has some of the best explainations I have seen. He also gives really great examples. For Electrical or Electronis engineers working in the field this books is a must. The work books has many great study projects to make you an expert. You can become a College teacher

Great introduction to basic circuit anaysis

This book has an interesting way to explain electronics. It is not too complicated for a non-engineer to understand. It does briefly mention a few engineering concepts such as finding current by taking the derivative of the voltage time the Capacitance.
This book seems to cover all the basic AC DC circuits involving RCL circuits while hitting on some basic calculus (Which you don't even need to understand to use the book.) You will need to know trig and basic algebra.
I had no problem understanding any of the material up until chapter 19 and especially in chapter 20. These two chapters are where the real circuit analysis began. It was kind of confusing to know how to go about solving certain circuits especially the ones using dependent sources. Finding the current directions was probably the most difficult thing to determine. But the more I did the problems the more it started to make sense.

Clear and Concise

This book takes alot of very hard topics to get your mind around and makes them very easy to understand. The book is good to know cover to cover and all the information in it can be used anywhere from the feild of computer's to electrical distribution. It's a great book to give you a solid basic understanding of electricity and how it's used.
